The trouble is that these filters fit more than one bike and Fram supplies the O-ring for only one of two O-ring types. Fram filter O-rings will fit and seal properly only with bikes using the O-ring type that Fram supplies. On a bike like mine, the Fram filter is the right size but the O-ring supplied will be too thin, the wrong shape, too small, and will leak. I would avoid Fram filters.
I've been using the Hiflofiltro Oil Filter with good results. It's a high quality filter and comes with two different O-rings to fit all applications for the filter. Go to the Oil Filter Application Chart to confirm the filter size.
This is a bad idea and unnecessary. Using the correct O-ring is all that is required.
Its a great idea and what it does is allows you to use any O-ring that you may have. Most people don't look at stuff when they get it. If they buy and oil filter and it has an oring they will just assume that it is the correct thickness and install it. If you take a little off of the cover it seals better.
I have installed many oil filters and the orings are different sizes for some reason.
Take a couple of thousands off and dont worry about it!
