Got this bike basically dissasembled or at least worke on by someone who never finished.

I pulled and cleaned out the carbs they wer pretty sticky and the pistons didnt move on 3 of them. So I have them all clean and back together and there are three "T's" between the carbs, only one had a fuel line on it when I got it, is fuel supposed to be fed to all 3 from the tank ? There is also a vaccuum line on the engine side of one, where does that go to ?

When I put the tank on and hooked it to the one "T" as it was when I got it and turned on the fuel, it started dumping fuel all over. I imagine its because the other two lines are not hooked up.

TIA !

Hi Mr. Concealed_45,

Have a look here: Where Do These Hoses Go?

And you'll find lots more GS lovin' on my website. I encourage you to clean the carbs properly. You'll find that information in your "mega-welcome". Let's get started. :)

I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.

Thanks, found some info there that got it running for me ! I had already completely disassembled and cleaned the carbs, just had the fuel feed in the wrong "T". Where do the 2 vent "T's" vent to ? Just a small length of hose or do the connect to something ?

Now it is sluggish at the bottom end, I assume there is some carb adjustment to be made, any suggestions ? Couldnt find carb adjustment write up's.

Hi,

The two vent hoses hang over the back of the airbox. They don't connect to anything. Do you have an airbox?

Did you completely disassemble the carbs and dip each carb body for 24 hours? Did you reassemble with an O-ring kit from http://cycleorings.com? The proper procedure is linked in your mega-welcome. If you just squirted the carbs with carb cleaner they may not be clean enough.

Ah ! now I see ! thanks for the pic. Yup, have the airbox, although no shiny chrome like yours :( I am pretty sure all parts are there except the battery cover panel seems to be missing.

Now I need to fix the "creative wiring" the P.O. did from the Battery to the fuse box. And get the carbs adjusted correctly and I think I can work on cosmetics after that stuff is done.

Yes, i totally disassembled and soaked the carbs and cleaned all the passages. Only thing I didnt do was the O rings.

Hi,

Tuning carbs is kind of an art. Check out the "Carb Specs", "Carb notes", "Plug Chops-Highest Idle Method" pages on my website.

WOW ! you have put together a great resource for these bikes ! Many thank you's ! I will read through and perform some of those techniques tomorrow !

Rans nice and smooth now ! Not sluggish anymore at the bottom end. But now that it is running I think it may have bigger issues. Getting a lot of smoke out of the left bank. Cant tell if its oil or mixture, I messed with the air screws to see if the smoke level would change, but no luck. I am hoping maybe it will go away after running a while, but not holding my breath !

Hi,

If you've awakened this bike after a long slumber, sometimes the motor can have a stuck ring. Put a little Marvel's Mystery Oil in the cylinders (teaspoon or two), let is soak for a bit, then run it hard. The ring usually will loosen up and compression will improve. Keep us informed.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

You give me hope ! LOL, I dont have any Marvel's, do you think I could get away with trans fluid ? I have heard it has the same effect on stuck rings.

Do you know of any sources to find the battery strap and cover ?

LOL, no I am still reading stuff on there ! Overwhelming amount of info ! I totally missed the vendors though.

Thanks for the link !

Anybody have ideas on why this bike may be hard starting when cold ? Choke on or off I have to crank it several tiimes without giving it throttle till it will continue to run on its own for a minute, then i can slowly give it throttle and hold it at 1500 or so for 20-30 seconds then it runs fine, but starting it this way is time consuming.

Also could not find anyone who had the battery cover for sale. Please let me know if you have one or know of anybody.

Hi,

Hard starting when cold is a classic symptom of the valves being too tight. Have you adjusted the valves recently? This bit of maintenance is not optional. If you don't adjust your valves you will kill your bike. Hard starting could also be related to dirty carburetors.

By "battery cover" do you mean a side cover? Or do you mean the top piece that also holds the tool kit? Those parts are no longer being sold OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) so you must get them from ebay, craigslist, or the parts wanted or parts for sale sections here in the forum.

Thank you for your indulgence,

Have not messed with valves yet, I did read a write up linked from your site. It appears I need some special tools and shims before I tackle that job.

Yes i mean the side cover that has the GS650G emblem on it. I will try Ebay.

You will only need one special tool and can pick it up from Z1 Enterprises for about $15 or use the "specially designed tool" referenced on Basscliff's site. Also, check the GS Resources Services forum and talk to GhostGS1 about the shims. For a small fee or the return of shims, you can get anything you will need.

Trust me, I thought it was alot harder than it turned out to be. But everyone helped out very well and I had it done in a couple of days (waited for tool and shims) after getting the valve cover off. Make sure you get a new ignition cover gasket, valve cover gasket, and breather cover gasket.

Also, try out drumhillcycle.com as they have alot of used parts for our bikes. I intend to get new side covers from there for mine as well.

Thanks, That "tool" looks like a good low budget alternative. I will see if I can find ghost for the shims. I imagine I need to disassemble it and measure the gap first !
