    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hi new to the GS world, trying to get my CL 1983 GS850G on the road. I have dismantled and serviced most of the air/fuel system, as per BikeCliff of course. One thing I haven't seen - how do you set the initial idle position when putting it all back together? Since I have had some problems (1-9 on the newbie list), I have been screwing with the idle screw and it is definitely not in the right position. I have backed it off until it's slack, and then snugged it, but I assume it needs to be cranked up so the bike will start. Can anyone offer some advice or point me to an existing thread that I didn't see?

Thanks in advance, mostly to BikeCliff. I am off to bench tune the carbs. Wonderful community here, strongest I've seen since the dawn of the web!
 
Twist it until it makes contact and then 2-3 full turns more. Once the bike is warm just twist it out till the idle is where you want it. Please make sure you're using a good fan while doing your engine tuning work. And remember.........we LOVE pictures.
 
Sometimes too much is just like twisting the throttle...it spoils the venturi and it wont start. If it wont start at what Rob says then start at 1 1/2 in and add at 1/2 turn intervals. Full choke and hands off the throttle grip.
 
Set the top mixture screws at 2 to 2 1/4 out from gently seated as your initial mixture starting point.
 
Wow 90 minutes 3 suggestions, you guys are the best. I'll start with 2-3 turns as per Rob and work UP from there. Thanks for the advice. FYI, I installed new 0-rings on intake this afternoon (boots have no cracks), replaced air cleaner intake boots (solid as rocks), full airboc sealing as per cliffbike, full carb clean with replacement o-rings, gaskets and whatever else looked like replacing. Only newbie trick I haven't tried is valve shimming. Doesn't sound like a newbie move... AZR asked for pics...
