    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Is a valve adjustment nessecary?

One of the many things on my list of wrenching tasks this winter is to check the valve clearances. I recently did a compression test and came up with the following numbers for cyls 1-4 respectively: 172, 180, 182, 180. I thought these numbers were really good. Does this mean I really don't need to adjust the valve clearances, or could they actually be too tight and still need adjustment regardless of the test results?
 
It is always a good idea to check the valve clearance when you get a chance. I've found that once the motor is broken in the clearance changes very little. I check mine evey time I change the oil and normally only have to adjust one valve if I have to adjust any at all. As far as being too tight, you can also have the adjustment too loose. It is also a good time to inspect the cams for any possible problems.

Should I remove the cams to inspect the seats? Or is it just the lobes that I need to worry about?

Just the lobes. To look at the valve seats you would need to remove the head but with the comptession readings you have I would bet money that they are fine.

Yeah, I'm pshyced that I don't have to deal with shims. I was gonna adjust them anyway, just for kicks.
 
This would also be a good time to get a Real Gasket for your valve cover............

Don't adjust them unless they need it. But if on one pair of valves you find that one of the valves has more clearance than the other but it is still within spec, you should try to adjust one of the two valves so that they are exactly the same or as close as you can get them. This extends the life of the rocker shaft and the arms.
