KPH vs MPH ??Hey IanCool 5th gear option, but my 85 GS1100G does 4000rpm at 100? does that mean that mine is an oddity? Did you also change your shaft when you put the 1100 diff in?

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.
If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I never considered putting bar weights on. Do they make a big difference.
I've ridden this same bike for almost 200 000 kms over the past 31 years. Its not that I am "whining" like someone suggested, I would like to make the bike be it's best. It has a lot of sentimental value to me and I would like to ride it for a long time yet.
I am usually the guy in the pack using the most fuel as well so I would not mind trying a different trany or final drive and see what it does to the fuel milage.
49er, when you put the new gearing in and the new rear diff did it adversly affect your start up in 1st gear. It would seem that 800 rpm difference is about a gears worth. Would you compare the start up to starting in second with the old gears?
You are probably correct, as far as gearing is concerned.I'm expecting it will be equivalent to the 1st gear of my 1150 with both the diff and 5th gear changes together.
The 2.9 rear end does force more clutch slipping on the 850 but it's not too bad on a naked bike. If you are packing a load though it may be a consideration.

Ed, I haven't experienced any clutch slippage since fitting Barnett plates and 1/2 a set of HD springs. Perhaps I'm just not making enough HP!!
Still have ample passing torque from 80 kph onwards in 5th though.:dancing:
On my next big bore 850, the capacity will be 1023cc. I doubt that lack of torque will be an issue with that, even with the higher 5th gear set fitted.
Cr will be raised to 11-1 too.
Should have clarified maybe, the clutch slipping business is in reference to an earlier question about getting off the line from a stop with the taller rear end - requires more clutch slipping. Regarding that monster of yours, good luck with that. Building stuff is cool.![]()
