k ive posted for help unfortunatly no one is around me so im tackling my carb prob myself and need some input. its a 81 gs1100e. pod filters V&H propipe and a dynojet kit. i have the following done to it. had the carbs rebuilt and jet kit installed and synched. i have the needles on the 4th clip from the top, dj138 main jets, and the air/mixture screws are out 3 turns. at steady speeds it surges like 3000 and under in rpm range, and breaks up around 6500rpm's. midrange is fine and runs like a ape. it dose start without the choke. gets a little worse when it warms up also. any help would be appreciated.

will it start cold with no choke? if so you may have too big of a jet in there, at least thats what mine would do. Now with the right size it needs choked to start up and get warm.

Just wanted to offer this as it was doing something similar to what mine was, Im still a novice on stuff like this so someone with well more experience will come along shortly.

yup starts cold with no choke. will that be the main jet or the other jet

You are talking about a pretty standard configuration. The DJ 138 might be a bit rich but that is whre Chef puts in. The needle is usually on the 3rd notch though which will lean it out a bit.

First thing to do is make sure it pulls to redline (this is setting the main jet). If it does then the main is conenct then move to the needle.

Does it pull to redline? If the 132 or the 138 is not right you probably have another problem like ignition. Have you checked your voltage or done a coil relay mod? How about the petcock; are you flowing plenty of gas?

First step, Can You pull to redline?

no coil mod all stock still except pipe and filters everything checks out fine on a voltage meter and plenty of fuel coming out all lines are good no cracks or breaks ya needle was on third but runs better on the fourth ill change jets and put needle back and see what happens

Are you postitive the carbs are clean? It should run fine with that setup.
If you drop it off a cliff it may hit its top speed.

ya im sure i had one guy do it then i checked it so i payed a guy that knows his sh** to do them and he showed them to me before he put them all back together. and i found a big cliff so it might hit mach 1:D

ok i put a 132 in for the main jet and it has a 160 for pilot. 3 turns out on the air/mixture screws. needle ste on 3rd clip. it pulsates on the bottom end still not as bad tho. had it on the 4th clip and no pulsing on the lower rpms while at a steady speed. still breaks up on top around 6

any other info much appreciated lol its starting to **** me off a little  lol its kinda funny i get so flustered i laugh at the bike

It is starting to sound ignition related to me. What do the plugs look like? Have you done a few plug chops to verify lean or rich? What do you have the plugs gapped at? Coils well grounded and all leads clean and in good shape? Voltage at the battery 13V+- ?

have not done the plug chop yet the ceramic on the plug is white untill the bottom by the treads is black it seems rich to me. cant imaagine coils being bad because last year it ran great. all i did was change the carbs and pipe w the jet kit. but i guess ill have to check them out. battery is new this year. usually if the coils are bad dosent it get worse as the bike warms up. i rode it around town and its the same cold or hot. i was also told that the pulsing at a steady speed at low rpms its running lean but when they break up in top rpms its rich or to much fuel thats why im confussed

would u have to change the ignition with just these mods? if so that sucks i wont be riding it this year lol. iv already put to much in this bike to get it running good :|

What are the float levels set at??? They need to be at 22.4mm and they ALL need to be the same. A one millimeter difference can make a dramatic impact on how rich or lean you're running. You also need to do a plug chop at 3/4 to WOT and see what the plug looks like. Breaking up doesnt sound rich to me, it sounds lean. My 1100ES is running nearly the exact same set up and from 6k to redline it will pull your spine out of your back.

You should have paid a guy who knows his carbs to do them. :-k

.

ya thats what i did the second time. the first guy i thought he new cuz he only works on the older bikes. then i asked around at bike shows and had a million people (seemed like a million) recomend the second guy i took them to. now im just about at the point just to sell the bike. iv spent to much money on the bike already. did most the stuff myself except for the carbs. and now im just fed up with it. i might just sell it now. ill wait to see if i get it before the weekend then decide. o ya thanks to all who helped much appreciated
