So this past Saturday after my class got out I was hankering for a good long ride to thouroghly test out my new handlebars. My normal riding buddies were all out already so I went solo due north. Rode to a beautiful place called Hawks Nest NY. A few of you guys may know the place. RT 97 out of Port Jervis. For those who don't here is a little slice or two.

Considering I am currently based in the 'lovely' town of Newark NJ, green mountains and rivers are a very welcome sight.

Another shot of the fantastic road. (with my shiny new inverted club mans that are awesome)

From this point I wandered my way across the state, Down into PA. And arrived back home some 5 hours later and 400 miles later. Not bad for an afternoon testing ride :D. I really like the posistion of the inverted clubmans over stock, alot sportier but still comfortable.

That evening I went out to visit a friend. On the way back from her house I went down. I was about 2 miles from my destination, thought I had enough gas to make it. I did not. Bike sputtered and died. No worries. I have a reserve. Pulled onto the shoulder of the road. Switched it, started right back up and continued on my way. I got to about 30 mph, and did a head check to see if it was clear to leave the shoulder. Next thing I know, I'm flying off the handlebars. I remember landing on my left shoulder and face. I could see sparks flying as the bike skidded next to me. I stopped sliding and immediately jumped back to my feet. I was out of traffic in the shoulder when I went down so I was already lucky. I was able to walk around fine. Like always I was wearing all my gear, armored jacket, helmet, gloves, boots. This definably helped ALOT. As you can see I slid on my face pretty good.

My helmet did it's job and kept me safe. The road ripped through my jeans at the knees and scraped them up, but not bad.

The bike was in sorry shape though.

Stator cover was smashed up pretty good.

Speedo was completly wrecked. And my new shiny handlebars were bent

What happened was there was a piece of debris in the shoulder. I didn't see it when I did my headcheck and it took me out.

The next day I hopped on here to try and source out some parts. A local member from Princeton is parting out an '81 850G so I contacted him and was able to get everything I need to get my bike back up to running shape. And for a killer deal too. Here's some free advertising Tom.

Needless to say it was one heck of a weekend for me. I must have someone watching out for me. I'm very thankful the damage to me, and the bike, was not permanent and easily fixed. I plan on putting the bike back together tomorrow night, and as soon as I replace my helmet be back on the road enjoying life as much as I can.

It was my first and only crash, and I'd like to keep it that way. But it's not gonna stop me from doing what I love to do.

Thanks for reading guys.
Keep the shiny side up.

Hi Mr. Tim Tom,

Well, that was a roller coaster of a day! I'm very happy you and your bike are going to be OK. Thanks for the beautiful pictures. Sorry to see the busted ones.

All the best to you and yours,

Cliff

Damn! Glad you're OK. Curious what the debris was that would throw you over the bars?

It was some sort of twisted metal stud or bracing. Looked like it fell off the back of a scrappers pick up truck or something. It was dark out, I never got a real good look at it. Didn't think to snap a picture of it.

Glad you are OK ,that helmet shot is a good reminder of why we wear them.

Tim Tom,

Wow. Looks like the bike AND you both did some pavement surfing. Good that you avoided any serious injurrys. The full face helmet really helped there. THe jacket?

At sight of your first photos I thought:
- hey, 82 650G, black and double gold like the one I had for 20+ years.
- what? that is New Jersey? Great road. Nice photos.

Man, ground the stator case down all the way thru. Hense the big oil puddle.

Your story didnt say how you got home, or if this involved any law enforcment officers.

Redman,

My jacket held up fairly well. The leather is scraped up a little bit on the shoulder. And a small tear in the mesh behind the armpit. I would like to replace it, but that's gonna have to wait for a paycheck or two. Currently I'm gonna patch it with some leather or something. I'd rather spend the money to get a new helmet first.

Actually that is in New York state. While some parts of jersey are nice, they just don't compare.

I did call 911. Two state troopers showed up in minutes. And am ambulance soon after. I got an official police report, as well as checked by the EMTs. They see a lot of riders go down much less armored than I was and told me how lucky I was.

I am a AAA member and so called them and had a tow truck take me and the bike the 2 miles home.

Wow, that just shows how fast things can happen ; if you had had on a skid lid or even an 3/4 helmet you would be hating life. :(

Glad you could walk away. :o

AH, only two miles from home.
Oh, now I see. THis was a different adventure from the one pictured.

And Mr. Tropper gave you a report (not a ticket). Apparently you could show him the thing that was on side of road.

I am glad to hear you are OK.

Reading your story it went from cool, long ride to "Oh cr@p" pretty quickly.
As they say, "Any crash you can walk away from..."

I am sure we all hope you mend up as quickly as your bike does.

Umm...that looks like an open face to me. Unless it has one of those hinged chin pieces I can't see.

Glad to hear you're ok. Those inverted clubmans look "just right" in that posistion. They curve around the instruments like they were designed to be from the factory.

Sorry to hear you dropped the bike, I admired your machine greatly when we met. If you need help with repairs send me a PM

Exactly 1 week later I've finished repairing my bike :D! While the actual work took only a few hours, It was much harder for me to find time around full time working, and being a full time student. However the bike is fixed, and running perfectly. I took it out on a shake down run yesterday, and logged over a hundred miles once I was confident in my repair work. A big thanks to the support here and to 'ardbeglily for supplying almost all the parts I needed (still interested in those crash bars by the way)

Pictures will be coming periodically depending on when I decide to take them

Cheers!
Tim
