    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I have a "78" GS 550 and it was starting to run better (so I thought) after doing the points and syncing the carbs among a lot of other things. The bike had been sitting for about a year or more... Went to get on the freeway yesterday and kaplat, it had no power, could barely go 45 miles an hour... Rides decent in 1-3 after it gets warmed up. Planning to clean the carbs today any other thoughts on this one?
 
Definitely carbs... more precicely float heights and o-rings...
 
Even MORE precisely..."it sat for a year" and the old fuel has gunked up every little passage in them. Sorry to give this advice, but i would do the full tear down and soak to get them free or the gunk again.

What chuck said. You can not clean them up in one day, they have to soak in carb cleaner to get all the varnished up gunk out of the passages. Carb cleaner and compressed air will not do it. While you are waiting, you will have time to check the valves and order O-rings. http://www.cycleorings.com/

Hi Mr. rbecker,

Has the intake or exhaust been modified?

Make sure the fuel system is clean, tank, carbs, petcock, etc. You will find the proper cleaning/rebuilding procedures on my little website. Go through the maintenance lists in your "mega-welcome" and make sure everything has been serviced, repaired, cleaned, replaced, adjusted, etc, properly. Shortcuts lead to frustrations. You have a 30 year old motorcycle that probably needs 20 years worth of maintenance.

So let me dump a TON of information on you and share some GS lovin'. :D
