All new forum registrations must be activated via email before you have full access to the forum.

A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I came across this diagram on the Mikuni Australia website (www.mikunioz.com):

Reading through these carb threads reveal that a lot of people seem to get confused about what to adjust based on throttle openings (and I'm no different), so I thought I'd pop it up here for all to see in case it helps.

Hope it helps someone...

This should be a sticky

We see it every day - my bike runs poorly off idle, my main jets are ***

Yep, it seems every second carb thread starts with the same question... but in saying that it is easy to get confused if you don't have something like this to refer to...

I'm surprised to not see the "this has been posted x number of times already" response, but maybe that's still coming... figured somebody had to have put this up before?

Actually, this site http://www.iwt.com.au/mikunicarb.htm has a shortcut to it somewhere in the GSResources, I just don't remember where. I saved it to my favorites. It has a good explanation (came from the upside down side of the world as well:D)

Hi,

That same diagram is in the Mikuni VM/Smooth Bore Manual on my website, page 9. I suppose I could post that diagram separately on one of the carb pages. That would make it easier to find.

EDIT: OK, it's up on this page:

Carb Notes:
Synchronizing/Troubleshooting/Theory

Thank you for your indulgence,

Cheers BassCliff! I think it's something overlooked by many and maybe being buried in a manual is making it a little obscure perhaps...

That chart is approximate. Look around and you'll find others that differ slightly. But it certainly is close enough to help you understand.
I've found that the jet needle has effect a bit earlier (lesser throttle openings) than shown, especially the VM carbs. Biggest issue many of us has is dealing with the overlap effect from one jetting circuit to another. Makes it more difficult at times.
There are still many out there that think you can just increase the main jet to allow for certain mods and you're good. This will help them understand.
