    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Mechanical advancer question

I just converted my stock KD ignition system to a Dyna S system. When I was checking out my old ignition system I found a mechanical advancer behind the spark generator. Needless to say I did not have to order one to make my conversion. I do have a small problem with this particular advancer, though. After I installed the Dyna S, I tried to check the timing out. I had no problem setting the timing for cylinders 1 + 4, but when I went to check the timing for cylinders 2 + 3 there were no timing marks on the advancer for cylinders 2 + 3. Is this a Normal occurrance or do I need to get an advancer from an older engine that has timing marks on both sides? I currently have an '82 GS 550L.
 
i'm trying to remember what my advancer looked like when i did the dyna S conversion. in theory, the 2-3 marks should be 180 degrees opposite of the 1-4 marks, right?

you can take a marker and mark the opposite side and see how close it is.

from my experience, Dyna gets it pretty close. i didn't adjust the individual pickups. i put the plate on semi-tight, fired up the engine and adjusted the plate until it sounded like it was running pretty good. it was abou the 'middle' point. i am getting a timing light this weekend to dial it in, but for a month now i've driven with the 'ear' tuning.

i'd say just set 1-4 and it 'should' be timed good.
 
Once you get 1-4 set, there is nothing you can do about 2-3...

The Martek ignition was like that also...1&4 set 2&3

The Newtronics ignition I have allows individual adjustment of the different cylinder pairs
 
actually Hap, the Dyna S allows adjustments for 2-3 via two hex-head allen screws. we can undo them, and move the 2-3 pickup 10 degrees. Dyna allows this so you can set the timing for each pair of cylinders.
