    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Must be the petcock, right?

I changed the stator and the R/R in my GS 550, and the now bike charges. Yeah!!!

...but initially it wouldn't start. I unscrewed a plug from one of the carb float-bowls, and not a single drop of gas!

...I then removed the tank, and hooked the feed line up directly to a gas bottle, and it started right up.

What's the best action here? I don't mind spending money. Buy a used petcock? Rebuild the existing one? (Do they make rebuild kits?)

personally I would take it apart and make sure no junk is gummed in there first. Does your petcock have a vaccum tube that feeds the number ## carb?
 
If your petcock has a 'prime' position it should allow fuel to flow freely without needing the vacuum from the carbs to open the petcock valve. This should only be used to fill the floats after maintenance or perhaps if the bike has sat for a long time. Once you get it started, put the petcock back on 'On' or 'Reserve'. If the bike stalls after a few minutes you need to rebuild or replace the petcock. Don't leave thie bike sitting with the petcock in the 'prime' position. Fuel will eventually leak past the float valves and fill your airbox or crankcase.

sound like a bad vaccum leak too the main carb. It feeds three, then distirbutes it too the other three thru their tubes. I would opt for takeing apart the petcock and make sure that the vent tube is not blocked. Your fix might be a simple one. Blocked vent tube, can means gas wont flow, It is suppose to flow when the engine is running. Another trick is this. Add a fuel shut off valve between the main tube and the tank too the carbs. This way you know for sure you wont be leaking any gas into the block. At least do it this way till you get some fresh and clean gas in there. Sound too me like a vaccum tube leak or bad seal on it too draw in the gas. The diaphrgam can go bad on them if they havent been used in a good long time. I use armorall to soften my up. But make sure its dry before you put it back to gether.
