A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hi All,

i recently split the case on my 81 gs650e.
All went well except... when I separated the two casings by lifting the bottom case off the top (per manual)
a small dome-headed pin dropped out. Problem is I have absolutely no idea what it is or where it came from! I was hoping a few wise heads who know these engines inside and out might be able to identify it and tell me where it belongs?!
I've attached a couple of photos below with exact measurements (in mm).
Hope someone out there can tell me what this is.
Thanks in advance.

It is the neutral or gear indicator pin, goes on the end of the shifting drum (outside)

Champion! Thank you gearhead, much appreciated!
Had no idea what I was looking at.

If it is the neutral/gear indicator pin, that would have been on the outside, left-rear corner, near the sprocket. There is also a possibility that it is the neutral detent mechanism, which lives inside the cases. The neutral detent mechanism is what lets you feel a detent between first and second gears to know that you are in neutral.

The neutral detent is NOTHING like the plunger in his picture! It is much larger! That plunger goes in the left end of the shift drum & has a spring that goes inside the hole BEFORE you insert the plunger.
Ray.

It does look exactly like the neutral gear indicator pin but it would be odd that it fell out when you were separating as it lives in a very small hole behind where your gear indicator bolted to beside the front sprocket. Although I've torn blocks down before and that little part was stuck in the hole till the very end. One thing to look for is the very small spring that goes with it.
