Need good adhesion technique for painting with stencil

I'm currently in the middle of a paint job (pics will come when done) and am working on my side covers. I don't want to put the little emblems back on, but would still like to have the lettering that says "GS550L," so I'm planning on writing the letters using a stencil and a different color paint.

I just cut out the letters from a sheet of paper to make the stencil, but am at a loss for how to keep it pressed down on the side covers while I'm spraying the paint. On a test piece of plastic, I tried an adhesive spray, but that left a bunch of gunk when pulled up.

Anyone have suggestions on a good way to tack it down?

Use frisket paper. It is sold in craft shops and is made for doing stencils. It has a low-tack adhesive on one side and works very well for this sort of work. A tip to prevent bleeding under your stencil - spray a light coat of clear over the stencil area first, than do your second color. That way, if anything bleeds, it is the clear and then the edges are sealed up for the color to follow.
