    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hello I have a 82 gs850g I got the bike not long ago bike has only had 800 miles put on it in last 6 years. I rode it home an hour drive it did fine, has pretty much sat since i drained all gas added new full tank and put in a little sea foam. I just changed the plugs now it will not idle wants to die will only run with choke set to at least half revs fine but when it is about to die and i rev to keep it going it backfires and dies. also pulling the #4 plug wire has no effect on the engine, Ciol? I know the carbs need a good clean but bike did run fine untill plug change
 
Carb dip time,thorough propper cleaning,some junk could have jarred lose u never know.
Read all u can adjust valves clean carbs da da da 30 years of maintenance must be done completely.learn to love working on your bike till tip top,no shortucts they are longcuts.
And read top 10 newb mistakes.
 
i would check the plugs and make sure they are not damaged, sparking through the plug, and gapped correctly. you do need to do all the maintenance otherwise you will never realize the full potential of your machine, but i would start with the simple stuff. if no spark you need to find out why . then start with the maintenance
 
Your bike will not run properly until the required maintainence is done.
The problem at this point is your pilot jets are clogged from evaporating fuel and need to be cleaned. As long as your at it though, you may as well do the job properly and disassemble them, dip them and install new o-rings.
These bikes are old and need to be worked on from time to time to keep them in tip-top shape. There's no way around it, no short-cuts or quick fixes. :)

Yes, listen to Larry.

Please check the Newbie Mistakes thread and carb rebuild tutorial linked in my signature. GS bikes are good for 100,000 miles with proper maintenance. No maintenance means the bike could break down at any time since it's already 30 years old.
 
Okay, I will offer up the stupid suggestion - are the plug leads connected to the correct plug?

Try putting the old plugs back in. This will eliminate wrong or bad new plugs.

Make sure the petcock is working - try running with it set to prime. You could have knocked a vacuum line or cap loose.

Otherwise, my guess that some crud was knocked loose by the Seafoam and is now stuck in you carbs.

I remember a tip about old automatic transmissions, if the fluid has never been changed then don't change it. The new fluid will clean away the crud which is keeping the seals from leaking.
 
Just ordered parts from Z1 hope to have done by next weekend.
