A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I just need to see if anyone can help me identify the model number of these carbs? They come off a 79 gs850 and the clymer book says they are vm26ss. The issue is when I google the rebuild kits for these it's pulling up a carb with a spring coming out of the top which mine do not have. I have posted the images below in hopes this will help. Let me know if I should take any additional pics.

image.jpgThis is the view from the top. As you can see it doesn't have the diaphragm and spring.

Those ARE the stock '79 850 26mm carbs. They are in sad shape but should come back to life. Follow the carb rebuild tutorial found on this site.
Get your O-ring kits from www.cycleorings.com and don't forget the intake manifold O-rings also. And don't forget to post some pic's of this bike that you are saving.

Like stated above... Those are Mikuni VM26 carbs and here is a link to the VM rebuild tutorial.

Also, don't waste your time and money purchasing any rebuild kits. The only thing you should need (barring any PO screw ups) are the O-rings and maybe some gaskets. None of the aftermarket rebuild kits contain equivalent quality parts as what you have in there now. Most everything just needs to be cleaned PROPERLY.

Be careful with the sharp point fuel screws on the bottom of the carbs. The tips like to get stuck in the carb body and break off. Do not attempt to screw in the screws and seat them before backing them out. Just remove them straight away and dip the carbs properly. Don't do one of those quicky spirits out jobs with the carbs ganged together either. Do the job right the first time. Last point is there is no reason to remove the needles from the slides like the tutorial suggests unless you are rejetting the carbs. This just makes for more work and possible lost parts.

As everyone has said, those are VM carbs. Man can't wait to see a picture of the bike those were attached to. The carbs you were looking at on the parts fiche were likely CV carbs (they have a diaphram with a spring on the top) which the 80' and onward 850's had.

I would just like to first an formost say thanks. I've been on a few forums and you all are by far the nicest and most helpful group so far. This is my first bike as well as the 78 gs550 I got at the same time. It was a 2 for 1 kind of deal to help a guy and and to give me a hobby. Here are the pics I have so far. Also if there is a way to upload more than one pic at a time let me know. :)photo 1.jpg

This is what it is now, I still need to order a petcock because there wasn't one on the bike.photo 4.jpg

Thanks for the info. I am completely taking everything apart and starting from the ground up reusing everything I can except for seals and gasket because they are all shot.

Thanks I was wondering where I coud get some of these parts. I found a site called suzukipart.com. What do you think of this one?

As posted earlier in this thread: www.cycleorings.com for the carb O-ring kits and the intake manifold O-rings and bolts.
Search Ebay for seller georgefix for the new petcock which is about $50.00 from him with shipping and has the same exact casting number as the stock Suzuki part. ;)
If I may ask, how much did you have to put out for both of those bikes and do they both have clean titles?

No feel free to ask me questions. I have both titles and they are clean. He bought the 850 new, which is crazy to me. I gave 500 for both bikes. The gs550 is in very rough shape and I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it; any ideas? Thanks for the petcock idea seeing as I was gonna shell out 100 bucks for one. Also please let me know if I don't share enough info for you to help me I can also post pics of the carb parts seeing as how I almost have them completley apart. My plan was to get the carbs finished and get the tank up and going because it has been sitting for 5-10 years. Should I worry about dipping into the engine yet or see if I can get it to start up?

Get the engine started first and do a compression test to see what you've got before you think about tearing the top end apart. You really should do a valve shim job before you do the compression test. One OEM place I like a lot is PartsOutlaw . A lot of people here on the site use them.

Ok thanks, I plan on this taking awhile so I'll try and keep people updated.

Welcome to the site and good luck with the resto.
If you put your location in your avatar there might be a helpful GSer near-by.

Check that spring!

Check that spring!

It looks like your throttle return spring is routed incorrectly, it would be dangerous to use like that as it will not snap the throttle shut when released. It is supposed to attach to the nub sticking off of the piece that the throttle cables attach too (in your pic it is to the left and below current spot). It looks like the nub is still there to use. Here is a youtube video that shows your carbs and how it should look: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRoDLeNA0jA. It looks like and adjuster and nut is supposed to be where the spring is attaching now. You may need a new spring, pic makes it look too long. Off the bike, it should be 2.5" long from end to end and needs to be pretty strong. Definitely fix that in your rebuild.
