    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Where would I be able to get a brand new petcock like... yesterday? Think the dealers still carry this item? I am in Los Angeles area and really need a new one ASAP. Thanks guys.

Don't know about a dealer having one in stock, but bikebandit and ron ayers have them new for around $50. What happened to yours?
 
I tried taking it off yesterday to see if I could clean it as the lever was extremely difficult to turn even when using pliers and after removeing the petcock from the bike, I undid the little metal(chrome) lock cover over the leer, took the lever out, and jI heard a snap. the white valve which turned brownish yellow came out and there is a little metal ?band? that look like it was bent. I didnt take the back cover with the 4 screws off as I didnt have another gasket to put back in, so Iput everything back the way I remembered taking it off, started the bike ran fine until I went on the freeway and at about 80 acted as if it had no fuel. Bike died, and I couldnt get it restarted. So I pushed it off the freeway to a gas station about a mile down the road and left it there. Hopefully I will be able to get it started to get it home today, if its still there.

Bummer about having to leave your bike. :( Sounds like you're describing the coil(little metal band) that when installed correctly pushes on the diaphram when in Prime postion to allow fuel to flow without the vacuum. One end of the coil has a tang that fits into a hole in the petcock body and the other end(longer tang) pushes against the center of the diaphram. The coil is easy to distort, but can be carefully bent back into shape. This is clear as mud, but you should be able to at least get your valve working on prime which would allow you to get home. The petcock lever on my 1983 GS750ES has been a swine to turn ever since the bike was new. For a time I used pliers but I was concerned about breaking off the lever............so I have been riding using the "reserve" position for 20 years (and haven't run out of gas yet). :D

my petcock went the same way on my '83 gs750es. i replaced it with a pingel. had to block off the vacuum line, but no big deal. works excellent. slight modification to mount it but no big deal.

Petcocks are certainly the "Achilles heel" of the GS motorcycles....It's just amazing how many posts have been written regarding the problems these little devils cause. I'm sure you could find a Pingel in LA but you might not be able to find the adpater. I got mine from the Harley shop but had to order the adapter. Pingels are GREAT!! :lol:
 
you can also just remove the metal spring, you will lose the prime position, but it will work.
 
well got the bike to start, and was able to ride it home. ordered a new petcock from a local dealer overnighted for about $100. Hopefully this will fix my stalling problem once and for all... Yeah Dan I was talking about that metal band. Problem with taking it off completely is that I loose the prime position which was the only position that would get hte bike to restart after high speed stalling... lol..
HOPEFULLY I will be able to do the WEd night ride out here tonight.. if my part comes and works.. :) WIll let y'all know..
