I have an '82 GS400L (8 valve model) and I recently decided to replace the clutch plates and springs.
The factory manual for the GSX400 twin series, the Clymer manual for the 400/425/450 series, and the fiches on cmsnl.com all show that there are supposed to be 7 each of the drive and driven plates. When I pulled the plates on mine, there are 7 drive (friction) plates, and 6 driven (metal) ones. The 500 series manuals and fiches show the 7/6 configuration, even though that clutch system is supposed to be nearly identical.
How many plates are supposed to be in there? I would think that there's supposed to be friction material against the metal of the sleeve and pressure plate. Why do the manuals show a metal one against the metal sleeve?
