A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Suzuki calls for changing the filter every other oil change - 4000 mile intervals. I change mine every oil change - 2000 miles or so.

Cut an old filter apart, look at the paper.

If it looks new you can go longer on the filter.
If it's all full of metal particles and crud, you don't want to go longer.

They usually stay very clean on middle aged engines in good condition.

I change mine every spring, right before riding season. I also change it right at the end of riding season before lay up. In addition, every 3K. Amounts to 3 changes/year, filter on each. What kind of oil are you using? Maybe a different weight would hold out a little better for you?

The cost of a filter does not equate to the cost of rebuilding the engine if you are wrong. I change both at the same time, cheap insurance.

I like to change the oil and filter at the end of each season or every 3000 miles. I figure since I'm using a modern synthetic oil and modern K&N oil filter instead of oil and filter from the 1980's I will have no issues going 3000 miles on the oil like the manufacturer says I can.

Changing the oil too often is a waste of money. You need to change the oil before the oil starts to break down. The manufacturer's maintenance schedule is a good place to START. It will really depend on the type of riding you do and the environment your bike operates in. IMO unless the 500 miles includes many 1/4 mile passes changing the oil that early is not necessary.

When you take a shower, do you put your dirty underwear back on?? lol

Somebody has to ask, ... why are you wasting money by changing the oil every 500 miles?

.
It was a necessity as the charging rotor came loose, twice.Fixed propper now and has held up.Once the petcock i thought put to reserve was left overnight on prime putting fuel to oil, that makes 3 times in just 800 miles or so lol.
Valve seals went, causing the head to come off and a valve lap at the same time.Changed oil also at that time to be safe.
I bought the bike with 16k it now has 20k on her.Including the initial oil change when bought that equates to?5 times in 4k miles.Clean oil and a 6 dollar fram when something happens is worth the precation,
But now i that all things seem ironed oiut, i was just curiouse what others do under Normal conditions, nothing is evr normal with me.it is always something haha.
And yes always Rotella or equivelant
