A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

My Oil light has come on, right after i topped up the oil. I checked it before, and it was low, so i added about 500 millilitres of oil. I take it for a spin and BHAm, the oil light comes on. I dont think i put too much in. what does this mean? also, i cant seem to find the oil filter, i found the plug at the bottom of the assembly, but the actual filter i cannot find. i took off the 3 screws like the guy at the shop told me, but there's all this metal mumbo jumbo. and i cant even find anything in my manual about changing the old filter. i have a 1980 gs 400L with 21,000 Km's on it. can anyone help me with my pathetic problem?

Tanner, I don't know about your bike but any that I have ever owned the filter is right in the front of the engine at the bottom. If you look on bikebandit.com you should be able to look at some of the schematics under the oem parts section for your bike that should show you well enough the location of the filter. If not then surely someone else on here will jump in here in a bit and give you what you need. Sorry I couldn't be more help but I don't have the 400.

If that link doesn't work try looking at the schematic under oem parts for the 1980 GS450 crankcase. The botom part in the front is where you can see that the cover goes.

I was just at the Suzuki dealer today and took a peek at the filter guide. All of the bikes of our vintage use the same filter but different gaskets. You are looking for a 3" round filter with a 1/2" covered port in the centre. If you yank it out of your bike you'l be able to see it isn't like a typical car filter because you can see the paper media.

They cost about 4 bucks and another 2 bucks for the o-ring if yours is leaking.

ps. My oil light would come on at an idle if I my oil was below the dip stick. You have to remove the disptick and clean it before checking your oil on the centre stand. The dipstick ALWAYS reads full when you first remove it no matter what the level really is...it's a poor design as the oil does not drip off of it after the previous ride.

Good luck, Steve
