Oil pressure

Ok I swapped out my clutch springs and went for a ride today. First time in 3 weeks on the GS 35 minutes in the oil pressure light come on.... Weird right? It seamed fine no leaks and it was topped off and full... Help what do I do? LOL I hope that this is not a tear the engine appart kind of issue :-(

First just pull the oil pressure switch, clean and check that the plunger is working, ...

Actually, before you pull the switch, make sure the wire is attached to it.

The 450 uses a real pressure switch, not that plunger thing used my most other GS's.

Yes, check the wiring.

Ok thanks guys. I don't think its electrical, I don't have any more electrical issues generally. It is weird that it seamed to go off for a bit after it built up pressure and ran for a couple of minutes with out it on, then it came back on and started to get very hot. Humm...

Motivation to take all of that apart again and drain the oil 0%

I think that I will drive it to a random location and push it off the side of a cliff somewhere in the mountains.

Actually, this statement can be shortened up a bit more.

Before you go to all the trouble of draining the oil and doing whatever else is on your plan, just test the wire and switch.

Open up the cover so you can see the switch. Start the bike, see if the light goes off. If the light goes off, use a jumper wire to temporarily connect the oil switch terminal to ground, the light should come ON. This will tell you that the wire is good and that the switch is probably good.

If you start the bike and the light stays on, disconnect the wire from the switch, the light should go OFF. This will tell you that the switch is bad or that you really don't have any oil pressure.

What did you use for a gasket?

The oem gasket is designed with oil passages in mind and the gasket act's as a guide and seal to route oil to the balance shaft and pressure switch. If for some reason the gasket ripped or was out of place, You could just have an internal leak and not loose any oil. outside.. that would explain the light only on when warmed up and leaking badly.


But first things first. As Steve says: Unplug the sensor when its running and if the light is still on you have a short and the engine is good. If it goes out then you have two options.


1 drain it and check the gasket

2 get a 0-100 psi gauge and test the pressure.

The pressure tap is the 17mm bolt just under the ignition housing.

should be 70psi IIRC

Your probably pushing enough oil not to damage anything but I wouldn't push your luck until figuring it out.

Its really not that hard to check a few things, and even if you don't want to drain the oil just tip the bike way over to the left and you shouldn't spill any oil. Just remember to support it well and put it in gear.

I used an OEM gasket, and was pretty OCD about installing it, torqued it to the torque settings, and really really was pretty meticulous about lining it up with the passages. I even tacked it with some ( three little dabs) to keep it from moving around around the edge to keep it in place while it was installed.No leaks....

Pressure switch was dirty, but it cleaned up on the outside, and was getting power. That's about all I tested with it.

I'll give the pressure test a go I guess. Funny I saw a gauge this weekend on sale at the store and though oh geese I hope I don't need that...

I am at the take it all back apart and give it a once over to see if I can spot anything. I am sure I borked it up somewhere. I will probably try the pressure test and take it all back appart to see if its working. Might order up a new pressure switch and give that a try as well. I would be surprised if it was the pressure switch, but stranger things have happened. It did sit with the clutch cover off in the garage for a week while I waited on those parts to come in, I took it off and measured the clutch disks.

More info after the weekend when I have more fiddle with it time.
