Painting Emblems

Hey guys. I recently repainted my emblems with a few tips from other folks on the board. I would have purchased new ones, but they come in gold and I really needed the chrome look so as not to clash with the rest of the bike. I did this for both the side and tank emblems

I'll keep this pretty short.....

1. First I stripped the existing paint using aircraft remover. Easy.

2. Next I applied some primer paint. I did maybe 3 or 4 coats just to lay a simple base. I used an enamel primer from duplicolor.

Note: Someone had suggested laying down vasoline on the portions of the emblem where I did not want paint sticking. My initial attempts at this failed pretty significantly, and here's why... Vasoline is incredible difficult to limit to a specific area, even with a Q-Tip. Though it was very easy to remove the paint from the vasolined areas, it tended to get on the sides of the letters too, thus creating an uneven line.

3. I painted over everything with caliper paint. I chose caliper paint over engine enamel or regular paint just because it was thicker, and I thought it might be more resistant to gas or wear in the long run, no other reason.

4. I put two or three medium coats on the emblems. I let them sit for about two hours.

5. Using my thumb nail, I slowly began scratching off the paint from the front of the letters. I was very careful not to scratch it off of areas where I wanted it to remain. Timing is the key here. After more than two hours it begins to get harder and harder to scratch off the paint. Before two hours then it hasn't hardened all the way and it can peel off some paint from the sides. I use my nail because its hard enough to scrape it off, but not hard enough to hurt the finish :)

Anyway, I ask so darn many questions here I thought I might be able to provide someone else information. Hope this helps.

JC, how do they look?

I too wanted the silver finished emblems to keep my bikes authentic. I opted to wait for them to pop up on ebay. So far I have scored a set tank emblems for both my 1100 & my 1000. The emblems on the side covers of my 1100 are the new gold type. My 1000 had very good silver side cover emblems already.

One thing I did do with my gold tank emblems. I painted the black backround silver, and the gold letters black. I used a small paint brush, and the finish is not so good...if you look closely. But from a distance they blend in nicely with the paint job. Take a look.

I think that's a good alternative as well Tom. Ultimately I would have purchased them off of Ebay if I could, but after 9 months I still hadn't seen the 1980 GS1100L model emblems in silver so I went the other route. Funny enough, I think my emblems were originally Gold and Faded to silver, if that's possible.

I'll post up a good after picture this evening. I don't have any good before pictures, but the reason I repainted them was because the black paint had chipped off a number of spots and revealed the gold metal underneath.

In terms of how they look, I think it's pretty good. You're still at the whim of the metal, so if thats chipped nothing you can do about it. Very close up you can see some inconsistencies in the line along the side of the letters, but nothing you can tell from a few feet. :)

I do not know about the L models, but my '78 1000's all came with silver tank & side cover emblems. If you try to order them new, you'll get gold emblems. My '80 1100E had gold tank emblems when I bought her last year. The silver set I scored on ebay look better.

Sorry for the delay! Here's a picture... Again if you can buy em new go for it... if you can't then this is what they could look like. I will say that the paint looks fantastic; it's the silver that is in poor condition.
