    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

This is the fiche for a caliper for a 1980 GS250T.

I've never taken a caliper apart before. My Clymer manual advises throwing out and replacing all rubber pieces whenever you have a caliper apart. After 30 years, I agree!

So, which part are rubber and should be replaced?

2 is a "piston seal"
3 and 11 are "boots"

So, I imagine, those three?
 
yes but if the piston is in bad shape then you can buy it as a set with parts 2 and 3 included.(item 1)
 
Yes, that. Also, 11 may or may not be damaged by some leaking fluid, and 14 is nice to have in good condition. Some visual inspection is in order before ordering parts. You can't assume you won't need a piston; you can't assume you will.
 
Dogma is correct IMHO. Best to take it apart to see what you are up against. In my experience, there is about a 70% chance you will need to replace the piston as often they are damaged by rust buildup. If the piston's chroming is cracked or pitted( on the area inside the caliper bore) you will need to replace as rusting can and will freeze the piston. Have a look at this one for an example of what you might find:

While that one was not frozen there was a buildup of rust starting in the caliper and it could over time have started to eat at the piston.

That caliper and piston did cleanup well and while the seal was still good, it got replaced.

It is best not to mess around with your brakes so when in doubt, "change it out".
