I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Please help me double check my timing

Picked up a 650 project with a bad transmission. I swapped over the pistons, cylinder, and head over to a engine I had with a good transmission. I'm getting around 60psi now across the board with my compression tester and it will not start. I put oil in one cylinder which bumped it up about 10 psi but still low. I believe my timing is correct but I want to double check before I tear into it and get new rings.

T 1-4 lined up with mark. Chain pulled tightly across the exhaust cam and installed with 1 parallel to head

20 links between 2 arrow and 3 arrow with 2 arrow pointing to pin 1 and 3 arrow pointing to number 20.

Tensioner installed with the locknut backed off a quarter of a turn.

Am I missing something? Any thoughts on the situation? Thanks in advance.

No on the shaft 650's. it's 20 pins not 19 . So overboostin, your timing is fine, but your 60 psi compression is pitiful.

Your exhaust cam is off a tooth. It needs to move forward one tooth as it's at 19 and not 20. Number one should be perfectly parallel with the top of the head.

I think what cowboy means is the exhaust cam is not in the proper position, at least it looks that way in the photo...

I agree with the cowboy, the #1 arrow has to be exactly flush with the top surface of the head and your picture appears to show it one tooth shy of flush.

Can't tell from looking at the timing mark whether or not you are at 1-4 T or 2-3 T. Make sure it's 1-4 T.

Agree with the others that the exhaust cam is off by one tooth.

Did you adjust the valves yet? The clearance decreases with mileage and many people damage the engine (burn the valves leading to low compression) by neglecting this critical maintenance.

+1 to this.

Also, the instructions I have say the 1 arrow should be at or a couple mm below the gasket face. Probably similar for a 650.

If it was only the exhaust cam position, it would probably start and run with reduced power.

This is the key (and correct) statement, not clear from pics. On my bike #1 was not perfectly parallel to head on TDC but it sure was close!

Regardless of the position of the EXHAUST cam, the INTAKE cam is off a tooth as well.

In this picture, the #2 mark is pointing to a pin on the left side of the link.

Count THAT PIN as "1", and you will find that the left pin on ALL of the links will be an odd number.
Since your #3 mark is also pointing to a left pin, it will be #19 or #21.

Your #20 pin will be on the right side of one of the links. :o
