A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Pod filters

I would like to put pod air filters on my 1980 GS850.

First, can someone recommend a good source?

Second, I assume I'll need to increase the mixture. A friend has recommended adding a small washer to raise the needle. He has also suggested opening the mixture screws a little. I've also thought about increasing the main jet size.

Since the mixture screws do not budge, I'm left with the washer-needle or larger main jet options. Any recommendations/thoughts either way?

Much thanks.

Hi. As well as the answers you might get from this post, a search using "pod filters" will yield you alot of info from this subject in the past!
I dont know enough about it to "safely" tell you the answer, else I would.
Anytime you have a question for this forum, use that search feature, its very valuable.

There are essentially three types of pod filters that will work on your bike. These are made by Emgo, UNI and K&N. The Emgo filters can not be oiled and need to be throught of as disposable. You can blow them out but their initial low cost has to be balanced with the fact that they are disposable. UNI makes some pod filters that use foam and CAN be oiled. These filters cost a tad more than Emgo filters. K&N also makes pod filters and these are the most costly. They have a lifetime warranty and can be cleaned and oiled many times. Which filter works the best? If you go by price = quality, then you would have to guess K&N. I think both K&N and UNI do some testing to show how well their filters work and you could try and find this info and look it up but remember that the testing is being done by the companies themselves and they are very much aware of what the other has to say so I would take this info with a grain of salt. Both probably work OK. Emgo doesn't publish any testing or make any claims and you can take that for what its worth. I have NEVER seen any independent testing done of bike pod air filters so I guess you will just have to guess which one you like based on your pocketbook and the info on hand. I have used all three types at one time or the other but use K&N on my KZ900 and Nomad. I used UNI filters on my last Vulcan 1500A.

I installed pods, and a jet kit on a bike just like yours with a Mac 4 into 1 pipe.

Find the jet kit here: https://secure.oc-net.com/ecomm/kn/jf.cfm

We used the UNI pods on that bike, but I would try these: http://www.pingelonline.com/carburetion.htm#Super Pro

They don't specifically have your bike listed, but I bet they fit, and they are K&N style filters, which I like better, and do flow a bit better then the UNI's.

The jet kit was close to perfect, I think I richened the needle by a half notch from the baseline instructions but that's it.

Heat the area of the needle with a hair drier Soak with PP plaster they should come loose

I like the K&N's. To get the pilot circuit right, you'll have to get the mixture screws to move. Throttle response may be a problem with the pods. This is helped by drilling out the vacuum orifice leading into the diaphragm chamber. Jet kits require this. Removing the two floatbowl vent lines improves bowl venting and fuel flow.
