POR-15 Opinions

Hey guys i was just looking up on some info and wanted to see how POR-15 would hold up to the elements on a bike. The way people talk about it is like it is indestructable. not only does it resist rust but its won't break down to salt and it doesn't chip or scratch. sounds like a pretty good choice to me. not only that but they make a high heat pant for exhaust and an engine enamel too. even just the regular paint heat resistant to 450 F and the high heat is around 1200 F

I used their tank liner kit once and the stuff worked amazing if you follow the instuctions. it got rid of any rust sealed and weak spots and harded up and lasted in the gas

But now I was wondering if anyone has had any use of it on the body. i kinda want to do my frame up with it. and the make an aluminum engine enamel which i might use on my old top end.

I used their frame paint and wasn't very impressed with it, chipped pretty easily.

I did a bike frame after the dealer assured me it was a gloss finish, came out almost matt black. And I had to gloss black the after effects with a rattle can. Not impressed.

I did my frame with their Blackcote... this is not the traditional POR15 finish but a top coat that is semi gloss. It's certainly tough and is flexible and hard to chip, but one thing I've noticed is that it has been rubbed back to metal where the handlebar switch wires rub against it.

However I will say that I brushed it on and it is exactly as advertised as a self leveling paint so no brush strokes are evident.

The toughest coat they have is the traditional POR15 stuff (can't recall the correct name) but it is NOT UV resistant, which means it's no good for motorcycle frames, only car chassis' where they're not exposed to direct sunlight.

The frame for my Kat is getting powdercoated.

However with their tank repair/sealer kit, yes, that is definitely worthwhile and it did my 450 tank like a charm. Will also be doing that on the Kat tank.

Edit: Forgot to add I painted my crankcases and valve cover with their Black Velvet high temp paint, and aside from some dodgy prep work by me it is holding up very well. It's exactly as advertised as a matt black. It brushes on pretty well and self levels so no brush strokes to be seen.

I think some of the Por-15 products are good and others not so good. The tank liner product is excellent, as is the regular Por-15 paint. It sticks well and seals off rust nicely which is what it's known for. It needs to be top coated if the paint is going to see the sunlight so keep this in mind though. I used their Hardnose paint on a frame and it seems pretty nice, not as nice as some other two part urethane paints I've used though. The engine enamel is a pass since it turns brown from heat. I was not happy with that stuff. I've use the Chassis Coat, which has since changed names, and it was okay, but nothing super special. It was kind of soft and scratched easily but looked great after spraying. At any rate, I like Por-15 overall. Just don't believe all their advertising verbiage because they tend to hype up their products beyond real world performance.

As Ed said depends on which product.

Tank liners is excellent and for something not rusted through arguably the best available.
For clear coat it is excellent, I have been spraying polished aluminum and it has lasted 4-5 years without any corrosion or lifting even where there are rock chips;
The black super coat flows out beautifully, but not necessarily better than powder coat. I would; call it a close second especially considering the lessor cost over PC.

So it looks like I might a swell get the frame powder coated. But if I do decide to paint the motor the high temp seems to be worth the price.

If you want a black frame there are some very good appliance epoxy paints that would be the cheapest.

I have done a lot of paint. The original POR 15 rust preventive does cling to rust, and prevent new rust from forming. Behind all of that it is a pretty crude old school resin type product with carbon black for pigment. It is very similar to the clear varnish used on wood boats called spar varnish. Its old roots dont hamper it from working on rust, it works great. The rest of their products I have used are pretty decent. A lot of them are over rated, they ride on the almost legendary reputation of the POR 15's ability to stop rust.

If you are doing a frame powder coating is without equal. Polyurethane catalyzed enamel is very good, so is old school lacquer.

I had terrible results with the high temp por on my cases Followed all the steps. Had to remove it and that was a nightmare. VHT is a better product in my opinion.
