    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hi.

I have had the petcock off of my 1980 GS1100E trying to find a reason it will flow fuel to the engine on prime. The recessed plastic actuator turns freely. The petcock internals are clean. I do not see a way to take this piece apart and my service manual does not cover this. Any suggestions on tackling this would be appreciated.

I am still waiting on new OEM pilot and main jets so I have had time to look after some of the finer aspects of returning my vintage bike to the road.

Your petcock is supposed to flow fuel to the engine in the prime position. That way if you have been settin' a spell it will start without excessive cranking,...... to get the vacuum up, to get the fuel to flow so it will start,yada, yada, yada, bling, bling, bling. :) Safe Riding, Bill
 
The reason the petcock will flow fuel when in the prime position is because it is SUPPOSED to. :-) :-) Prime is for priming/filling the float bowls when they are empty. If the bike has sat for a while, you would turn to prime for 5 or 10 seconds to fill the bowls, then select run and proceed to start the bike. If fuel is leaking though the carbs and into the engine, then it is the float bowl setting that is at fault, not the petcock operation.

I sure feel foolish. I meant to say that it will not flow fuel on prime. I will repeat that I feel foolish for mis-communicating this. I hate feeling foolish.

I read your post three or four times to make sure I was seeing it correctly, thinking I was mistaken. Is your screen intact? Even if it is I would guess a blocked passage, might want to try some carb cleaner and air pressure applications. Hope this help, Safe Riding, Bill
 
It sound like you bike has been sitting. Also, did you remove the petcock from the gas tank? The only reason it won't flow gas on Prime is that you're out of gas or the screens are clogged.
 
I had same problem on my 81 gs1100e. It turned out to be a small metal piece behind actuator that opens diaphram when its turned to prime had broken.

Patrick, for about $60 you can buy a new petcock and save yourself a world of aggravation. Anything that's been sitting up with gas in it is going to be gummed up and can be difficult to clean. Get the new petcock!
