    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Id like to replace the stock shocks on my 77 750, as Ive heard all the horror stories obout the stock suspension on these old machines. Now my bike only had 15K on it before i tore into it, and the shocks look and feel perfectly fine, but im sure there has been a change in technology in 27 years. Im pretty much a newbie to motorcycles and the only thing I have to go on is the looks, in otherwords, I think the stock is butt ugly. Ive searched and it seems that a lot of people are going with progressive, true? My question is, is the price differnce worth progressive as opposed to something like these?

As a newbie Im not a aggresive rider, but i would like something SAFE and comfortable. Any thoughts??

I say yes, It's worth the extra bucks. Those things will probably be worn out by the time you get them in the mail. You get what you pay for.
 
The stock springs/replacements are safe enough. They are not a performance product, but being a new rider, you dont have anything to compare and youre not going down the road ballistic anyway. Save your money, and simply ride a safe bike. A year down the road, you will have some experience and some ideas of what you like and dont like and what works and what doesnt work with your style of riding a bike..
Now, some things that may appeal to you due to looks or fad, you may later find objectionabale.

Just ride for a while before doing any mods.

Thanx earl, I appreciate the advice. Thats one of the things I like about the gs board, seasoned riders taking the time to talk with a new rider like myself :) Ill stick with the stock shocks and save my money. who knows, in a year I might wanna invest in a litre instead!
 
The shocks on my 79GS850 need to be replace too, but then they have 35K+ miles on them. Unles you are planning a complete suspension makeover I would use the originals
 
I can say for sure that in a year, you will not make the same choices as now. :-)

Hi Guys,
I've some Koni items on my GS, and it's SOO MUCH BETTER in handling and comfort. They have 4-way adj. preload and 4-way adj. rebound damping. They also have a true progressively wound spring, which makes the difference IMO. They are no longer available from Koni, but you can find them on ebay sometimes. If you do want new ones, there are identical shocks made by a firm called Ikon now..

If you have the money I would always throw it at suspension and BRAKES before anything else. (supposing it runs fine)

I replaced the shocks on my aging 450LE with these. The classic problem with bikes of this era was oversprung and underdamped. 27 years and 15k miles have sacked your springs, so now you're likely to be under sprung AND underdamped.

Will your bike ride better with the new cheap shocks versus your old stockers? Sure it will. It just won't have the ride quality it could have, with either new stockers or better aftermarket parts.

One other thing to look out for, the shocks for my 450 were a different length by and inch or so.
