    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

After taking some good advice from Keith K, I have decided to get better pods and also I am going to get a header for my wives 78 GS1000. I am now in the process of putting the carbs back together. I have spent 15 minutes trying to get the DJ instructions in some sort of order. I cant believe how terrible these things are. It says to use section A,B,C and E. I have part number 3304. A and B no problem but C says to Locate the air mixture screw and then says to drill out the plug. The picture it shows, mine does not have it. It says most 78 Kaw KZ1000 do not have the mixture screw to just skip steps 1 through 5. Whats up? These are my first carb rebuilds...

I also cant find any base settings for the pilot air and the pilot fuel. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you working on a GS1000 or a KZ1000? :-k

Base setting for pilot fuel -7/8 -1 turn for pods and header
This is the small capped screw under the carb at the front of the float bowl - uncap it, remove it and clean the carbs

Pilot air - 1 1/2 -2 turns -this one is visible on the side, near the back

You really need to clean your carbs completely and replace the O rings inside - I'm guessing you haven't done this as yet
 
Steve, It is a 78 GS1000 I am assuming the kit works with some kaws.

BigT, I have cleaned them and also installed all new orings and gaskets.
Here are some pics of the carbs.

Is the plug the one in the first pic on the side of the carb. There are no other plugs that I see on the carb.. Do I need to remove this or am I missing something in the instructions?

None of the adjustments on your carbs are under plugs.

The pilot fuel screw is on the bottom, in a notch at the front of the float bowl.
Stock setting for that screw is about 5/8 turn. It works better at about 3/4.
If you are going with pod filters and a header, set it to about 7/8 or 1 full turn out from lightly seated.

The air screw is the one that is visible at the right side of the second picture.
Generally, it is set to about double what the fuel screw is set to, but will be tweaked for best running after the bike is warmed up.
