quick brake pad question

hey guys, so I opened up my front caliper to clean it up and found that he pads were really really worn and needed replacement. anyway, I ordered some EBCs and when I go to put them on there seems to be not enought space between the pads to fit the caliper back on....I was wondering if I can just file off some of the material off the pads? is that safe to do, just want to make sure before I do anything stupid to my brakes!

No. The first thing you need to do is to buff the pads to remove any contaminants. Then use a C-clamp to move the piston back. After removing the glaze from the disc, the new pads can be installed easily. I am sure BassCliff's site covers this operation.

Did you try using a C-clamp to slowly compress the piston all the way?

the piston is all the way in im pretty sure, ill have another go at it later today and yea I'm following the instructions on BassCliffs site.

If the piston is all the way in and the pads are the proper ones....they will fit.

yup you guys were right just pushed in the piston a tad more and it went right on no problems. unfortunately the pads are still dragging some so i dunno what the hell

The piston seal is probably old and hard, causing the piston to drag

Did you pull the piston out to see what was inside?

I took out everything and cleaned the piston and the insides and the seals etc. followed one of the guides on BassCliffs site. the seals felt nice a rubbery, also bled the brakes after putting the pads in.

edit: forgot to mention its a 1982 GS400 (GSX400L to be exact...)
