    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Replacement airbox for '80 1000E, question about sizing and carbs

Hi everyone,

I wanted to know if an '81 1100 airbox, with the internal air filter, would fit as a replacement for my '80 1000E stock air box. I want to remove the second plenum that is above the battery (mostly just to make space). It's a pain to remove the plenum every time I need to touch the battery.

Then, should I expect any carb issues?

Can't answer your question about the air filter, but I do have to ask: why do you "need to touch the battery" so often?

Get a good AGM battery (that's a construction style, not a brand name), make sure your charging system is good, then you can pretty much ignore your battery for several years.

I don't know the answer about the 81, but removing the airbox on a 1000 is easy:

Remove right side cover
Remove bolt holding rear MC Reservoir
Remove bolt at back of the airbox
Loosen clamp holding airbox to plenum
Pull airbox back and wiggle out

Installation IS* the reverse of above

The big question is, why do you need to get at the battery so often? I only look at mine annually

Removing the airbox on my old 1000S (same as a 1000E) is super easy: lift seat, remove RH side cover, loosen screw for clamp at front of plenum, remove screw holding plenum to frame, then lift airbox out of the bike. Takes about 30 seconds total time.
 
For my airbox, I have to remove the tank bolt and lift the tank slightly just to be able to wiggle it out. That's the pain I'm trying to avoid.

I've been regularly adding/cleaning up electrical stuff at the battery for a while, recently did the SH775 and re-installing some other cross-country hardware (charger, camera, etc).
 
Why are you guys removing the RH side cover? All I do is loosen the front clamp, remove the retaining screw, slide it back a touch and rotate it towards me as I lift up. Not that wasting the 5 seconds it takes to remove the side cover is a biggy. LOL.
 
I haven't been able to get mine past the rear MC reservoir, so I pull the side cover and the bolt holding the reservoir too get enough room
 
Sounds like everyone has to wiggle a little differently to get the airbox out.

Guess I'll leave it stock for now, thanks for chiming in!
