I'm sure this is on here somewhere, but I've searched several different ways and I can't seem to find it:

I need an air filter to go in the filter box on my '82 GS650GL. The one that came from the PO fits, but it's not the plastic cage and foam that I think it should be. Where can I find the plastic cage and foam part?

Hi,

UNI shows an air filter for your bike, the NU-2440: http://www.unifilter.com/online%20catalog/streetsuzuki.html

Or do you need more?

Do you need #11 or #12?

#11 - CASE SET, REAR part# 13700-34810

#12 - FILTER part# 13780-34200

I don't know if the "cage" is part of the filter or part of the airbox. You may have to pick up a good used one if it's part of the airbox. #11 is a little pricey to buy OEM.

Thanks for the quick reply! I need #12, but I need the cage or frame or whatever it's called as well. I have the filter box and cover, but the filter that was on the bike when i got it is a disposable type and I'd like to get as close back to OEM as I can manage (in style, doesn't have to BE the OEM part). I can't tell if the UNI part comes with the cage or not, either.

You'll probably have to fabricate a cage out of wire mesh- cycle strippers seem to toss them with the dirty filter. It just has to keep foam element from collapsing under vacuum. Don't forget- LIGHTY oil the element and squeeze out excess.

Doesn't it need to fit snugly between the cover and the back of the filter box to have a tight seal with the passage between the filter box and the air box? Maybe I"m making this more complicated than it needs to be, but it seems like it would have to be pretty precise and somewhat stiff to not collapse when the cover pushes it up against the gasket around the "out" hole...

Yeah, the cage needs to keep the filter fairly snug. If you need dimensions, someone might be able to provide them.

sorry, no part number. Just went to the dealer wanting to by the foam and they told me the foam and the cage came together. That was two years ago. I know they got the parts fiche and got the number, then they cross referenced to some new number an voila!

Hi,

Wouldn't it be #12 - FILTER part# 13780-34200, as in the parts fiche picture above? The dealers are looking at the same parts fiches we are. Partshark.com has it listed for $30.48.

The UNI filter should be a drop-in replacement. Here's one on Ebay right now with a picture: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NOS-...rcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4cf0ed259d

But I wouldn't buy New Old Stock when you can get a brand new one for the same price.

Yeah, I ordered one from the local dealer for about $10.00 more than that, but if it doesn't include the cage I can get them to take it back more easily than via ebay, I guess.

Yes, good call. I'm surprised so few 650 owners chimed in on this thread. I must admit that I've never seen a 650 air filter. I know the filter "cage" is a totally separate part on my 850 and the parts fiche reflects that, the "filter" and the "element" are listed separately.

Just so you know, lots of auto parts stores sell new UNI parts. They'll order it for you too.

I am sure that #12 is the foam and the cage included. that is what I got. As a matter of fact I thought I was going to have to by the cage separately, since the one I had was not in great condition, but the bag came with. All I can say.

No ,it just has to keep foam filter from collapsing into intake. When you put cover on ,the filter is squeezed between front and rear of box to seal it.

A follow-on question, since I see some 650-owners in this thread, please:

In the airbox (the part between the filter box and the carbs), are there any baffles or anything on your bike? Mine is empty, it just contains the rubber boots that connect to the carbs (with the internal metal rings). My bike continues to act like it's getting too much air, but I can't find any leaks (ether spraying around the boot connections on either side of the carbs at idle doesn't yield any surges). One picture of an airbox I saw looked like there might be some baffles or something inside the airbox, but it was hard to tell.

Thanks!
