Reshaping L seat

I am looking to re do my seat on my L. I want a more aggressive seat. By that I mean I can lean forward without hitting that hump between the rider and pass seat. Any ideas? I would need to do a new seat cover too. I was thinking some combination of red/black would look good.

I was thinking, maybe take the seat from a non-L model. They are much flatter seats.

I did the seat foam on mine myself.

I got two different densities, one firmer than the other so I could have a comfy top layer to sit on and a firmer layer underneath so I didn't end up sitting on the pan after some time in the saddle. So far it seems to be going well.

I just went to a foam shop that does mattresses, cushions, etc. and checked out what they had and they cut it to the size I needed.

I just used a box cutter (ignore the glue):

And some contact adhesive:

Started off by cutting big chunky bits in roughly the right shape:

I wanted a small step up to the passenger seat, but nothing like the L and T seats have.

After more trimming with the box cutter and then sanding with 120 grit sandpaper it really took shape:

And I actually had it professionally covered, but I'd probably try it myself next time:

The upholsterer put another thin layer of foam under the vinyl when they covered it which helps even out any lumps, bumps, and seems.

Just remember that the cover needs to be stretched onto the pan, so you need to leave the foam a little larger than your desired end result.

I stuffed up the rear of the seat and took too much foam off:

I took it back and got them to put another layer of foam under there which made a big improvement, but still not as good as it should have been had I got the initial foam right.

That final pic is obviously an old one... no tank badges and the chain isn't adjusted yet.

Hope that helps...

Tuning in to this one. I'm doing the same thing but probably going to make it a single seater with a hump on the back for tools.

WoW the seat looks awesome great job!

Thanks mate, just took my time and shaped it slowly with the knife and sandpaper until I got the shape I wanted.

So far it's been 100% more comfortable than the stock collapsed foam that was on there before... had me sitting on the seat pan after half an hour in the saddle...

I am about to do the exact same thing. I am putting a g rear fender on my 1000l so the L seat wont fit. Ill post pics when im finished. Should be interesting.

reshaped my L seat

I just went through this with my 79 GS1000L. The stock seat was the most comfortable and ugliest thing I've ever sat on. I looked into replacing it myself, but was unsure I could get the new leather covered evenly. I had a local upholstery guy do it and it came out great. I wanted something more streamlined but still comfortable. It was hard to get very sleek because the seat pan for the L was not flat so the seat still has some rise, but overall I think it looks a lot better. It ended up costing $150 and he used some high quality vinyl.
