ok heres the deal i have a 80 gs1100L and after longish rides at 3500 to 4k an oil leak starts from the right side sig genorator cover ...... i did some inspecting and found the seal behind the advance weights to be leaking ....... my ? is can i replace this repair with the motor in the bike or do i have to disasimble the engine as it looks like the seal gets instaled from the crank case side ......

any help would b app:cry:

you can replace that seal without pulling the motor. you'll probably have to put a sheet metal screw or two into the outside raised area to have a "handle" to pull it out. Use caution b/c of the roller bearing behind it - don't put anything in too far. the new one goes straight back on over the crank.

not sure if you can get away without draining the crankcase if you leave it on the sidestand or not. but it was probably almost time for an oil change anyway?

Try your local bearing shop. I picked one up at mine for $13 Canadian, Ted

thanks for the info

i was afraid that the seal went in from the crankcase side....

ok .... now im confused ... i went to get the seal from a dealer today and they said that i had to take the case apart because the seal gets installed from the inside of the case.....
so does any one have a how to or other such info on this

I have 81 1100e and put one in a month or two ago.Use two screws to get old one out. lubed new one and drove it in. just make sure to drive it in straight. It was easy but ruined first one, put it in backwards ,Lots of threads on this if you search resources.

was your 1100e a 4 valve or 2 valve..... mine is the tscc 4 valve...

backwards ...... witch side faces out the black rubber coated side or the non coated side .....

the seal that is currently on the bike has the black coated side facing out .... but then agen it is leaking .....

any info would be app because i now have the seal and want to atempt this repair today...

The black coated side goes IN!!! Unless, of course, you have a race motor with a vacuum pump. On stock, & MOST other engines, the right side crank seal goes in with the rubber TOWARD the crank! Ray.

thankx so very very much ..... i was going to install it backwards

Ummm, your comment got me curious because mine was not that way coming apart, or going back together. But then mine is not a GS1100 either. So I hit BikeCliff's site and looked at the manual - they show the black side out. Are you saying it's better to install it with the black side in? What is the reasoning there?
