    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I have a 85 gs450l with only 2000 miles (it had barely 700 miles until 2007). The bike is like new but I noticed a sort of rough shifting especially when I engage the first gear after an extended period of time without riding it and the bike is totally cold (I warm it up first). The other gears seem to be shifting ok but a little bit rough and possibly noisy. The clutch lever seems to be acting normally (at least cable wise and smoothness) but I am not sure about the mechanical aspect of it. I recently acquired this motorcycle and I am not too familiar with this model. Is there anything that I should be adjusting or lubricating. Provided the low mileage I cannot expect a major problem but I want to make sure I would not creat one. Thanks for your help.

my 82 gs 450 l does the same thing, though it has 23k miles...
 
How often do you change the oil? I've noticed that GSs in general (at least those I've had) get notchy shifting when the oil gets any more than 2000k on it.
 
I got the bike about 300 miles ago, a couple of months, and oil was changed. It is as clear as new. Is there a separate gear oil that wouuld need to be changed?

No seperate gear oil but there are a lot of issues that can be looke at.

The clutch should be properly adjusted as per the manual.

The clutch may have been and likely was thrashed by every PO that laid his ugly mitts on the bike so after the adjustment verification check the clutch plates etc.

Rough shifts beyond that are usually in the shift dog or shift fork realm and others will need to guide you on that journey.

Oh yes adjust your chain to the tension prescribed in the manual and make sure you check for stretch because a stretched cahin is nothing like a new one and will behave oddly.

With only 2000 miles I kind of doubted that it could be anything serious. I adjusted the clutch lever about 1/4 inch and it rune perfectly. About that! Thanks you all.
