Hello from Ireland!

I've just picked up a GS1100L with stripped teeth on both secondary drive gears (the bevel gear set at the engine side)

The price of these gears new is horrendous and I can't find anything listed on ebay.

Does anyone on here have a set lying around at a reasonable price or know where I might find a set:pray:?

Anyone ever hear of converting one to chain drive? or should I just break it?

Thanks
Jock

Think the 1000G gears are same, or at least interchange.

Thanks for the info. I've been searching for part numbers to compare and can't actually find my "L" model, I can only find "GL".

Am I safe in assuming that the GS1100L and GS1100GL models are actually the same thing?

I think I may have found some gears for a 1980 GS1000G so I just need to confirm that my bike is the same as the GS1100GL
Thanks

Same bike GL is a shaft driven L model, the gears are the same as a G also. And yes I believe that the 1000G, GL are also the same. When you replace them though you will likely have to play the shim game to get them to mesh properly on your bike.

I was just looking at the procedure for shimming the gears. Might be a stupid question but is this a REALLY critical procedure. If i mess it up what is the likely outcome - broken gears or just noisy gears? Just wondering if I should give this over to a bike shop for them to do it.

will the gs850g bevel gear fit, the shimes are the same

Although I haven't checked all the possible combinations, usually the 850's have different secondary gear ratios than the 1100's did.

Jock, yes it a critical operation. The good news is, all you have to do is get it right! You have a better chance of getting it correct than your local bike repair shop. You have the time to play with it, they don't. Find yourself some hypoid gear marking compound, a good set of serviceable gears and let's get started.

I have some gear marking compound compound if you can't find it locally.

Thanks guys, I found gears on ebay out of a 1980 GS1000G for just under $70 for the pair. Just waiting for the seller to email me the updated delivery charge... one gear in each listing so currently delivery is over $100, hopefully the delivery will be closer to $50 when the two purchases are combined.

@rustybronco Thanks for the offer of gear marking compound. Will let you know if i have trouble getting some

Good luck with it Jock, there was an engine and bunch of stuff me and londonboad were bidding on this morning but we missed it.... maybe it will find its way back onto ebay in separate lots, nice to hear of other 1100GL's this side on the pond

Hey

Yeah the parts came and are currently sitting in a box in the garage waiting for me to get around to trying to fit them. I've been talking to local engineers and sharpie markers are what they seem to use to check fit so will be trying that soon.

I work shift in a factory and am also trying to get a motorcycle parts and accessories webshop off the ground so time is in short supply at the moment!

Thanks for checking up on me ;-)
