    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Shift rod(shaft) is loose. Will it hurt anything?

I have a 79 gs550 and Ive had a clanking noise for awhile now when i hit bumps whilst decelerating. Ive tightened every bolt twice and checked everything that moves. It is an internal sound though.

Id all but given up looking since it had not caused any ill effects,until i pulled the front sprocket off to check the sprocket nut. I noticed the shift shaft would pull out about 1/8 inch or so. It will also travel front to back but not up and down. Before i pull the clutch cover on the other side,does anyone have suggestiond for what is wrong? Could this be the cause of my noise? Ive had a few problems with the bike shifting but nothing the wrong shoe couldnt cause. Is it held in on the clutch side the same way as the sprocket side using a clip of some sort? Thanks in advance for any help.
 
is there any slack in the shaft going with the rotation of shifting? It should be centered and resist rotation. In/out play can't really be good, but it isn't necessarily bad. Any side/side play is bad and typically indicates a worn shaft, seal, channel or a combination there of. Any slack in the shifter can cause it to rattle the gear should you hit a bump or something.
 
There should be a clip on that side keeping the shaft from sliding in and out. Maybe the clip came off the notch or gone?
 
Agreed on both of the responses. You may, if you have a clutch side gasket to replace it with, check the shifter fork/cam, whatever you want to call it, to see that its not coming to far out of alignment. I have never noticed play in any of mine, so its something you'll want to attend to eventually, if not sooner.
 
mine (an 850) goes in an out about that much too (2mm or so)
when i had the engine apart i couldnt see anything worn that would be causing it so atributed it to the design
given that that rod is a well lubricated part and if the in/out movement you're describing is all there is to it, i dont really see how it would give you a "rattle" that you hear
