    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Stator Check - Price, Part, where to buy?

Its for my 1980 GS550T, feeling pretty confident the stators shot, so I'm looking to order a new one. Found this on e-bay

is the asking price reasonable? i can make an offer, i don't really know what the going price is for a new stator, any help on the price?

Are there other reputable places anyone would suggest buying from?

also, my stator wires on the bike run all the way to the rear, next to the battery, i had seen some stators with short wires, from the picture the stator looks to have long wires, i suppose i can just call them up and ask them about that, not 100% sure if they're long enough though
 
Get the stator and r/r from electrosport, read "the stator papers" on this site for a link. I just did my '82 550lz with their parts.
 
The Electrosport an RM Stators are identical I think other than maybe lead color. Take a look at some photos and judge for yourself. Most likely made in the same asian factory. Rick's is more money but they are very reputable from what I've heard. OE is another option - check Flatoutmotorcycles and get a price. Personally, I'd rather pay a little extra and get something better...but that's just me.
 
Thanks for the options, I'll take a closer look tonight when I get home and hopefully get something ordered. I was thinking of also getting a new R/R while I was at it... those are cheaper i think? $30-40 range?
 
For a new r/r expect to pay $90 and more depending on the model. Buy one from duaneage here on the forum.

The Electrosport parts can be purchased from most of our favorite online vendors. I also like Mr. Duaneage's r/r units. He refurbs them so that they bolt on with no hassles.

My RMStator part failed and was replaced under warranty. My Electrosport stator failed just after the warranty expired. The RMStator stator is in my bike now and so far, so good. I haven't tried a Rick's part yet. Maybe next time I'll spend the extra $40.

Sometimes those stator wires are not long enough. Have some extra wire, a soldering iron, and some shrink tubing on hand just in case.

Concerning the issues of the R/R's and the companies above... which, if not all of them, offer a corrected R/R with regulation on all 3 wires, and cut out the loop to the headlight.

I've read some information scattered around, but can't really remember where i read it. I feel like I'm forgetting something, was there not also an issue with the oem R/R's? where they could'nt dissipate the heat right?

Sorry just a little nervy, don't want to buy an identical r/r or stator and have it last a year, ya know?

The dreaded Suzuki disease! I'm currently running the factory unit with a slight modification. I added a load resistor across the battery to dissipate some of the energy when the battery water level is low or the headlight is off. The Suzuki stator is a 3 phase generator, if the headlight is off; it tries to dump the additional energy onto the battery. If the battery is in poor shape and can?t receive it, the wires (check connectors) and the R/R overheat. It's real important to have a good battery!! The Gs's have a habit of over-charging the battery. The water level has to be checked and maintained frequently or the charging system will fail. The newer components are better then the originals but they too can fail.
