A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I am going to tank the tank off so I can get at my carbs. The key for the seat lock fits and turns part way but doesn't seem to unlock the seat all the way. Am I just being too gentle or am I doing something wrong? The PO had the seat reupholstered so is it possible the lock is getting caught? Is there a way around this lock mechanism? I want to get started but can't even get the seat off to take the tank off. :D

didn't know where to put this question so it ended up here

Just turn the key while bouncing the seat up and down a bit, should free it. If not, try spraying some WD40 in the key hole and work it around with the key a bit as well.

Hi,

Yes, since the re-upholstery the latch just might be getting stuck a little bit because it's tight. Push the seat down/up a bit while you turn the key and see if you can get it turned all the way enough to release the seat. Just don't bend the key.

Thank you for your indulgence,

What bike are we talking about??
Some, like the 82-83 1100E, have a spring loaded clip on each side of the seat that needs to actuated after the seat is unlocked.

I looked at your intro post and see you have an 850GL (put it in your sig line please). After putting on a new seat cover or re-upholstery, the lock does get rather tight sometimes. I had to push down on the seat and push in on the key to get mine to release when I installed a new seat cover. That might be the trick you need to do. Hope this helps.

I got the seat off. Thanks guys. Now time for the carb teardown. Other than the chem dip any special tools I need?
