    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

The return of self-cancelling turn signals

The bike is an 82 GS1100G, I have had this bike since July and never have the self-cancelling turn signals worked. A few weeks ago my stator died and after repalcing it, "Voila!!" self-cancelling turn signals have returned.

I can only assume I have boosted my voltage enough to activate that part of the bikes electrical system. I am pleased
 
Good for you! Only my right blinker turns itself off, but I usually switch it off myself anyways.
 
I have that feature on my old Goldwing... and I think its a PITA. I tend to drive 'extra-defensively' at times of high traffic, and signal farther ahead than the minimum '100' feet' usually called for in driver's instruction manuals. So, I find it cancelling itself a LOT, BEFORE I turn.

But, I suppose if it isn't quite so (short)time-sensitive, then maybe it would be cool.

Be careful what you wish for; you may get it. 8-[ :)
 
Exactly on my 1100 that how i know its time to throw the charger on my bike.
When they quit working I just put the trickle charger on over night and they will work great for another 6 weeks or so.
 
'mazing... didn't realise they were voltage sensitive. You learn something every day around here. :)
 
Interesting... I'm looking at an '82 650GL w/ 18K on the clock. Looks like the original charging system. New battery. Guy that has it says when he got it the battery was old. He's had it a few months and put a hundred miles on it, decided biking was not for him. Anyway I'm concerned about the charging system for no reason other than it appears to be original. Self canceling feature does not work. Makes me wonder after reading this thread...
 
My '82 650GL does not have self-cancelling signals. My (wife's) 850GL does.

As far as having them turn off early...I had them on my two Kawasaki 1300s, my son has them on his two Yamaha Ventures (1200 & 1300), and I now have them on my 1500 Wing. Yes, they can turn off early, but I have gotten in the habit of turning them on when I feel it is right to do so, then thumbing the switch again as I approach half-way to where I plan on stopping, and maybe again just as I stop. It has gotten to be a habit over the last 27 years that I have been doing this, so I don't think much of it. I find myself checking to make sure the signals have turned off, too, so that part is also covered. PITA? Maybe, but I don't mind. 8-[

Ah, well that's good to know. It just wasn't a feature on that bike huh?
I rode the 650 today. She purred smooth and got up and going well. Esp. considering the guy guy said it had sat for a couple years before he got it and the bike was using a sock for an air filter. I might make him an offer if I can verify she's charging OK.

Right.. My 82 GS650L does NOT have the self-cancelling feature... only my Goldwing does... wanted to be clear about that.

I'm like you, Steve, I just recycle them 'on' again repeatedly before I turn, and I know they'll shut off again.

I'm just pretty conscientious about turning them off when I'm on the Suzi. That's why I think they're a PITA. I can live without them, but no way to disable them on the Goldwing. ah, progress....

To each his own. Either way, with 'em, without 'em, I'm fine. :) One of the smaller things in life I can afford to 'not sweat over'.
 
You mentioned that there was no way to turn them off on the Gold Wing. True. The only bike I have ever seen where you could turn off the automatic portion was my '79 KZ1300 and my '84 Voyager 1300. There was a switch on the left hand grip, next to the hazard flasher switch that turned the self-cancelling feature on or off. On both of my bikes, I went to the wiring harness under the tank, re-routed a wire to make them ALWAYS self-cancelling, and used the switched wire to activate a relay that powered my driving lights. It was nice to have an "extra" switch that looked built-in...because IT WAS. \\:D/
