    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Finally finished a snowblower and lawnmower overhaul just so I could get that stuff out of the workshop and start the restoration of this 80 GS750L I picked up. Started to break the bike down. Back half, exhaust, and tank are gone etc. but then I noticed this THING under the fuel tank, on the right side, just behind the steering neck. It is a stack of 3 flat thin plates that total less than a 1/4 thick. It's location is opposite the horn, mounted horizontal, held onto the frame with two bolts. it's about 2x3 inches with a cutout area and holes where it looks like something was riveted on to it. Does anyone have a similar bike that they may be familiar with what this is?

Sounds like a coil support to me...gots pictures, do you have?

No, the bracket is forward of the coils. I can't do pictures.

Is this bike supposed to have two horns? Because there is only one on the left side, and this bracket on the right side. Maybe a horn support that the horn broke off of?

My '83 750 has 2 horns. Mine is just about the same height as the valve cover.
 
Yeah, that's the location, right side, same height as the valve cover and just forward of it. But I looked all through the wiring harness and can only find the connections for the left side horn. Seems if the horn had broken off this bracket and had been removed there would be some wires left over.

Oh, well least of my concerns at this point. Need to finish disassembly to the frame for paint. Really wrestling with this because this bike probably doesn't need all that work. It's in nice shape and would probably clean up real good. Oh, but then I would be bored this winter. Yeah, that's it! Need to press on. Besides, I find a lot of comfort knowing I have inspected all critical components, bearings etc. and all is well.

I finished stripping the bike to the frame last night and started to look things over. It's looks in really nice shape so far. Anyway I got to looking at the THING and it's a home made bracket. My guess is the guy put some kind of different horn on it and took one of the originals off. DARN. I couldn't find the wires for the original though. That's OK I'll sort that out with the schematic when it goes back together.

Thanks to all for your help, as usual. I'll post for a horn. Or did I already do that?

The power supply to both horns would come from the same source, soyou can simply jump from the existing horn to the added horn. Electrically, it will make no difference.
