Hi everyone. I checked my valves today and I had a question for the gurus. The spec for lash is .03-.08 mm (1978 GS1000). I had a few valves that were at .09. Knowing that the shims change incrementally by .05mm, I opted to leave the .09mm settings. My logic here was that as they wear, the lash will decrease. So, if I put a shim in that will reduce it from .09 to .04, I'll effectively be shortening the time until the next adjustment is necessary. Does this make sense? I've always heard that a loose valve is preferable to a tighter one and I figured that .01mm out of spec would just result in a little more valve noise? So what do the experts think? Is it preferable to stay in spec, even if it brings you to the tight side of things, or is it ok to be a little out of spec (.01mm) as long as your err on the loose side?
Thanks, Dan
