    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Now, with regard to your "infamous 1980 petcock," make sure that you don't have it switched to the "prime" position. In the normal position it will flow properly whenever there is engine vacuum, and shouldn't leak when the motor is off (in other words, you should be able to pull the fuel line off without gas leaking all over the place). If it does, theres a problem with it (as mentioned before).

Yeah, Ed helped me out with that. Turns out the bike had been in prime since I bought it. All fixed now, and the petcock is functioning properly.
 
One other thing you should check as a result of it sitting on "prime." Some people have reported that if the bike sits on prime their oil gets contaminated with excess gas flowing into the sump. Others have stated (and I think correctly) that if the carb floats are working properly this shouldn't happen, but just in case you should unscrew the oil cap and take a good sniff. If it smells like gasoline you'll want to do two things:

1. Change the oil because it IS contaminated and

2. Adjust the carb floats (possibly rebuild the carbs) so that excess fuel doesn't leak past and into the sump.

This wouldn't typically be a problem while the bike is running, but it would still indicate a problem with overall tuning and, of course, you wouldn't want to duplicate the contamination problem after changing the oil if the petcock DOES fail and allows gas to continue flowing when it shouldn't...

If you find out the oil leak is from the head,which is when you see oil leaking around the bolt in the middle of the front(exhaust side) of the head most likely then you will have to replace the rectangular oil seal and the head gasket.I hope yours is just a valve cover gasket.If you intend keeping the bike and fixing it no matter what the leak is from and the motor runs good but just leaks, then by all means a petcock will be needed.I got mine for my 1980 gs 1000 from old bike barn for $85.00.Takes 5 minutes to install.No gas should be leaking,but mine did at first even after i replaced it because I didnt realize a new petcock would be sent to me in the prime position.You can only turn the slot with a small screwdriver and not too often or it will break.Once is enough anyway.Prime is when the slot is vertical.Change it to horizontal.Might just fix the gas smell/leak problem.
