DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Dear all,

I am rebuilding a GS850 from 79, and I have had to order a lot of used parts. I have just fitted an ordered second hand airfilter in the air box, and I am guessing that something is wrong.

As you can see on this image:

... there is a approx. one cm. / ? inch of space between the top of the filter and the dividing wall that I guess that it should connect to.

With the current setup, I would guess that the air would go around the airfilter, instead of through it, and thereby omitting the benefits of said airfilter.

Am I missing a part? Have I got the wrong filter?

Thanks in advance.

There should be a seal of some sort on top of the filter frame. It probably just got scraped off. This stuff, or something like it would fill the gap and seal it up. Have you a hardware store nearby?

Thanks Roger.

There are no HomeDepots in Denmark, but I am sure I can source something similar from the local Hardware Store.

:)

I have a similar issue on my 1982 GS850. There is supposed to be a "frame" that the air filter attaches "to or in" and mine was missing. When I purchased the bike, I noticed the K and N airfilter was just lying in the bottom of the airbox. My temporary solution was to cut some strips of wood and wrap them with electrical tape and place them in the bottom of the airbox below the filter to force the filter higher and create the tight seal like yours is also lacking. I know that is not the best solution but without the air filter frame and the inability to find one seemed like it would work temporarily. It appears from the photo you have a frame in yours and agree the weather strip is probably your best option.
