So I bought two 81 gs850g s in hopes to get one moving. The seller told me that one engine was good to go just slap it in and fire it up. Sorry but I don't trust that sort of thing. Low and behold the top end of the 'good engine is more or less scrap metal. The other cylinder is egged out pretty good and I need to bore it out. Anyone have any idea what pistons will fit? I've been looking for weeks and the closest I can see is a honda goldwing. Thanks!

Stock is 69mm, bunches of 69.5mm & 70mm available, how big do you need to true them up? Can you find 4 good cylinders out of the 8 that you have? Mix & match won't hurt a thing. I have accumulated a few parts and can probably help you out with cylinders, pistons or both. PM me if interested.Roger

Thank you for the welcome. I'm not really good and the whole introduction thing. Rphillips... you said 4 out of the 8. So that means the sleeves are actually removable? That just blew my mind. I never even though about that. Not sure how to remove them but I'm guessing it's not rocket surgery. I'm not a mechanic what so ever. Heck I'm nearly a machinist lol. I just have a quite high mechanical aptitude. So most of this is really new to me. I had no idea what I was doing until I did a teardown of a 74 CL360 down to every last bolt.Last edited by Giarcike; 10-25-2020, 11:25 PM.

 It's just simple thermodynamics.

Once you have the cylinder block off the crankcase, you can determine whether you want to remove all the sleeves or just one or two. If you want to remove them all, place the block on a board. A piece of plywood or a 1 x 6 that is a few inches longer than the cylinder block will work nicely. Place the block and board in an oven, set it to about 250°. The aluminum block will expand faster than the steel sleeves and it will drop when it expands enough. I have used a propane torch on the outer sleeves. It only took a couple minutes of heating, but I have no idea how long it will take to do the oven trick.

To put the sleeves back in, turn the block over so it falls ONTO the sleeves. Might have to fine-tune with a torch.

Hot air gun (Paint stripper) will do the job also.
Once you have changed sleeves and made sure they are fully seated you will very likely have to skim the block face to level the liner tops too.Mikuni Viton Choke Plunger Seat Renewal.

That's good news... there doesn't seem to be an easy route with gaskets. Some careful old fashioned elbow grease in the form of scraping.... I know Bwringer sometimes uses a nylon sanding wheel, that's worked for me on occasion on the end of a drill 1980 GS1000G - Sold 1980 GS1000G - Sold
