    1978 GS1000 in Switzerland

    Hi everybody,

I bought a 1978 GS1000 about a year ago (and been lurking around here every second day since then). The bike's mostly original, but hasn't been ridden much the last 20 years. Working in IT, I like to get my hands dirty from time to time, and the GS is giving me enough opportunity. I got some electrical experience but did not much maintenance on motorcycles so far.

I am trying to keep the look of the bike original, I like it's straight lines and the 70s feel. Did the most urgent maintenance last year: replaced original brake lines with steel-braided ones, exchanged rear shocks as old ones were leaking, got new tires, battery.

The bike has been running well so far, but on my last trip in the black forest the rectifier failed (thanks, statorpapers!), and probably also the stator is damaged (but I'll open a thread in tech section for that).
So I am just busy sourcing a new r/r at the moment.

This forum is superawesome, helped me a lot so far!

Glad to be part of this community!

That is a fine looking ride you have got there. GS1000H model correct?

Looking at the frame number it refers to GS1000EC... What does the H stand for?

Looks like a scene from "Sound of Music" or is it "The Great Escape"

Please provide more scenery with your bike as the main theme. I friggen' love Europe!

The Great Escape is a movie that many of us remember watching on television during our teenage years...if you are in your 40s or 50s anyway. Based on the true story of prisoners escaping a German POW camp during WWII, the movie combines many elements of history and excitement. Watching Steve McQueen

Haha, this looks like the area here. It even says"Basel 124km" (which is where I live) on a sign at 01:24, but apparently the film was shot further east, in Bavaria.
... And I doubt my GS would have made the jump over the wire...
