Roads around Lexington KY

So my birthday is just under two months away and I have a need for a serious vacation from work that doesn't want to wait until BC in June. There is a horse show event in Georgetown KY that the wife is interested (I am as well to a smaller extent) the same week so part of me is thinking of heading down that way for a ride.

Nothing is definite yet but I wanted to ask those who know (Marvinsc) what might be some decent roads I could try in case I decided to go. Any tips?

Not really sure but I beilieve pretty much all of Kentucky has great riding.

Take 68 South of Lexington, you won't be sorry. I do it every time I'm heading home from West VA or the Red River Gorge area. That way I avoid the Bluegrass Parkway.:)

BTW, 68 goes right through downtown Lexington, UK, Rupp Arena, etc.

You might want to rethink riding in KY- the salt has destroyed the roads- They are so bad in fact that folks are breaking the beads on the tires and going flat from hitting the holes.
I'd head further south- where winter hasn't been so hard.

I'm less than an hour from Lexington - hit me up when you plan to be here and I can take you down to red river area.

Good riding

Sorry I didn't see this sooner.

Just about any direction you go out of Lexington you'll be on fantastic roads. 68 was mentioned already. It used to be much better before they straightened some of it out. It is still a fun road though going west out of Lexington down beyong the KY River and past Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill. Take it all the way to Harrodsburg or cut north west on 33 and wind your way through some real pretty countryside to Versailles, KY -- not pronounced anything like they would in France. Don't know how much time you got to ride.

If I was starting out near Georgetown (KY Horse Park?) I think I would meander my way over to Frankfort. Don't take the larger Rd--no fun in that. 227 north to 1688 to 1262, then zip over on 460 into Frankfort. Though it's the Capitol it ain't that big. Very neat place sits down in like a bowl surrounded by the KY River. Buzz the Capitol building and then head north out of town. I think I prefer to follow the east side of the KY River north towards Carrolton, KY. Lots of small windy roads. Don't take 127, too big and straight. Eventually find your way to 355 and follow that all the way up to Carrolton where you'll see the confluence of the Kentucky and Ohio rivers or just go as far north as General Butler State Park and take 36 to the right. Follow it until it intersects with 227 and follow it all the way back to Georgetown. You'll be on some small windy roads and go through some extremely small towns. This is back country stuff. Fun and interesting to me.

If you want horse farm beauty and rolling hills stay closer to Lexington, and west and south to Versailles, Harrodsburg, Danville, or go east to Paris, Cynthiana and south towards Richmond.

If you do go north towards Carrolton, you may want to gas up where I-71 meets 227. Most of the path I gave you goes through places without gas stations.

Thanks Winfield, I'll have to keep this information somewhere as some work issues prevented this trip from happening right now.

Hey there folks, just a shout out...
I'm next to KY, about eighteen miles from the border in West VA.

I have a friend coming to my house this weekend from Nashville to fix my bike :)

Have you been to the Red River Gorge GS rally? I have not, or any other rally, but hope to get to it some day. I imagine that type of thing is hard for you to get to since you work on Sundays--the one day a week you work :p yeah right

Have you ever been to Wilmore, KY? AKA Mecca to some.

I have not been to a rally or to Wilmore. I hope to have a running bike soon! I moved to WV in October and have not ridden anything in the area. But when it's running, I may be looking for Saturday rides :)

I find that Monday works very well.
