I'm going to get one of those GPS's, all my maps are getting pretty tattered and worn. I just hope they're not too hard to learn to use.

When I was in navigation school we had about half a dozen or so different devices to learn to use. Including Loran. Radio Direction Finding, Satellite, etc..... One day one of the students asked the teacher how to use the GPS ..... The answer he got was " Turn it on " ......

Yeah, well, just don't go too close to Turkey or Iran, where serious GPS spoofing is happening.

yup, life without a cellphone is unimaginable, I can't leave the house without it. I still find it difficult to orientate myself without a paper map and landmarks, navigating through London last march with just an iphone GPS was frustrating I wanted a paper map so badly.

I like maps. I enjoy reading them. They tell me so much more than that little gps screen can.

What GPS is really good at is telling me where I am, right down to the bridge, intersection, terrain feature, etc. I am standing next to. What GPS is really bad at is telling me where I am in relation to just about anything else including my destination.

I never begin a trip plan with a GPS, always with a map. I want to see my start point and my end point. I want to know the general direction I will be traveling and to study the roads that will take me in that direction. From there I can establish segments joined by checkpoints. As I move down from the big picture I might involve gps in detailing the routing within the segments.

The other thing that voice GPS is really valuable for is helping you be in the correct lanes and taking the correct exits at the intersections of multi-lane limited access highways in big cities with heavy traffic. With multiple levels of roadway passing over and under each other it is not at all intuitive which lanes will get you onto the road you want to be on leaving town. Next thing you know you've got a quarter mile to get across six lanes of rush hour traffic to make the exit ramp you need. Cutting down on that anxiety is something the GPS does improve over a map by a lot.

Believe in truth. To abandon fact is to abandon freedom.

              Nature bats last.

Is that so they can hide shipments to Russia?
