Tarriffs passed down
I recently got ahold of Paul at Gofast to get a replacement screwdriver. After UPS dropped it off i got a bill from them to pay tarriffs on it. Wondering if anyone else has been billed and if so from what carriers.

The logistics of collecting tariffs has been a work in progress. Sometimes the shipper pays, other times the receiver gets a bill. On eBay, there are banners across many listings mentioning the need for the buyer to pay tariffs. And some shipping companies are charging processing fees. It's going to take some more time before everything settles down. The worst part is that it's hard to understand how much you will be paying, since the bill may not arrive until after the parts do.Ed

One things for sure, the little guy always suffers. I bought a camera lens from Japan, no tarrif on it, but it stopped in the USA on the journey so I had to pay a tarrif on it. At least the big shipping companies are making money on this I suppose. I've just stopped buying anything for awhile.1986 1150EF

Weve had tarriffs on things for a hundred years and those are typically tagged onto retail prices. This is the first time i have gotten billed from any delivery carriers. You dont get a bill each week after you going shopping on tomatoes from Mexico or bananas from Costa Rica. Those are just price adjusted accordingly.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

Just to add to this, UPS has always been the absolute worst way to move stuff between the USA and Canada. Even before "tariff" became a household word, UPS was well known to charge a fortune in brokerage fees for handling duties and other details of international shipments, as still getting it wrong much of the time.
Also, the word tariff only appears on that invoice with "FREE" as the tariff rate. There are no tariffs charged.
As idiotic as tariffs are... are you sure you're complaining in the right direction?
I see "PGA Claim Fee" of $1, which goes to UPS as their fee for transmitting the data to the federales, and an "entry prep fee" of $10 that was discounted to $4, which is also a fee paid to UPS for their alleged services. These have nothing to do with the goddurn thieving gubbamint and everything to do with increasing UPS shareholder value.Last edited by bwringer; 09-30-2025, 10:44 AM.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

Dang Chuck, confusing invoice. Under tariff rate it says FREE, then says $10 for entry prep fee??? then $1 for PGA Disclaim fee, again ??? then says Net Charges $5.00. Do you have a clue what the $5.00 was for?1983 GS1100E, 1983 CB1100F, 1991 GSX1100G, 1996 Kaw. ZL600 Eliminator, 1999 Bandit 1200S, 2005 Bandit 1200S, 2000 Kaw. ZRX 1100

On one of the bicycle sites I hang out on, lots of folks buy stuff from Europe, since bicycling is so big there. Again, repeating myself, the logistics of collecting and processing tariff's is very confusing, even for the carriers.
Getting charged for tariffs, baking the price of said tariffs into the price of goods, is everyday business around the world. What's NOT normal, and what skews discussions like this into the political realm, are people that can't stop themselves from making political references about them. Such comments belong in the Vortex. Discussion of the logistics of paying tariffs is NOT political. Too bad some people refuse to follow forum rules...yet again.Ed

The $5 was for UPS to process the "paperwork" of shipping goods from Canada to the US, and the money goes to UPS, not the US or Canadian government.
It's all stuff that every international shipper has to do, but most roll it into their shipping rates. For some reason, UPS handles this via random surprise bills.
Chuck owes $5 to UPS. Annoying but not the end of the world. Chuck does not owe any money to either government. (Well, not for this anyway...)
I'd pay up, or UPS could cause trouble next time you send or receive a package, especially internationally.
Protip if you sell stuff online: give customers choices in shipping. I will happily (well, not happily... grumpily) pay extra for FedEx or UPS shipping because USPS in our area is a bit of a deliberately sabotaged mess, for Vortex-related reasons.
And if you use a USPS package consolidator like Mail Innovations or similar, I hate you, I really really hate you. I just love waiting two extra weeks for my stuff.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.
