New Haven is an interesting town. A literal $hit-ton of history, one of the great American universities, and that schizoid personality so many university towns have (in some ways, USC is similar, with one side of the uni being safe to leave, the other (though now being gentrified in the California school's case), not so much."Thought he, it is a wicked world in all meridians; I'll die a pagan."

the CBC investigators failed to understand how DNA results are interpreted as most people do. The results were accurate they just didn't understand the variances. One error was assuming identical twins would have identical DNA that's a myth identical twins will have vary similar DNA but not identical. The lead investigator and her identical twin sister were tested with different results, they incorrectly assumed the tests must be flawed.Originally posted by bccap View PostCBC Marketplace did a show on them last year ..... They took samples to a real lab for analysis and then sent the same samples to the various companies that offer the service to the public .... The results were all over the place and though I can't remember the percentage that matched the " real " lab it wasn't very high ...... And the competing companies were not even consistent with each other ..... They also found a correlation between how the customer filled out the accompanying form with the results that were returned to them ......
Ancestry genetics is a business and as most people have no grasp of it the DNA ancestry companies tell people what they want to hear. The results won't be the same for two different companies as there's an enormous amount of information and customers only get a tiny fragment of that and interpretation of the results will vary.
Genetics was a career option for me 40 yrs ago so I've tried to keep up but it's far advanced from when I studied it in Uni.1979 CBX, AW440 Maico, GS1150EF

DNA tests are very generalized for commercial reasons the give just the minimum of information. Tests are not the same as two different companies may be skimming different information so they may not give the same result so both are likely correct.
Everyone in Europe is related gentically within the last 1,500years, no matter where what corner of europe your family came from you're related to someone in the opposite corner. People are consistently horny and will boink anyone else, it doesn't take long for DNA to transfer across the continent. Just to add some mind expanding bafflement, everyone in this forum is related to everyone else in this form. Not only that you are related to every other living person on the planet, we are all one family. Superficial
differences are just that, colour, shape, size are just regional family differences.Last edited by wyly; 11-13-2021, 08:54 PM.1979 CBX, AW440 Maico, GS1150EF

Everyone here is genetically related to a king or a king killer. Charles the Great/Charlemange Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire died 814AD had some 15-17 legitimate children and Kings being kings had uncounted illegitimate children all over western europe. Wait 1,200 years and millions upon millions of western europeans have a genetic link the Charlemange. We're all descended from royalty at some point.Originally posted by Grimly View PostI come from a long line of cattle rustlers and king killers.1979 CBX, AW440 Maico, GS1150EF

100% euro is what I assumed would be my result but test revealed a tiny percentage of Melanesian (SE Pacific islands) assumably the result of colonial ancestor. The trace amount would indicate a melanisian grandmother 6 generations ago, if my son had taken the test the trace amount would've been to small to detect as the testing company I used went back 6 generations.Originally posted by Cipher View PostI have

Small bit of French doubtless via Norman's
14% Scandinavian Go Vikings!
The tes was no granular enough to indicate regions . I think this is largely due to the mad stirring of loins and dna after trains made it possible for one not to marry yor cousin
All medical conditions present in me were correct
Thankfully none of the horrible stuff is present1979 CBX, AW440 Maico, GS1150EF

The DNA tests are evolving, and getting very useful. The newer tests come with a huge amount on your health. Things like if you are predisposed to Alzheimer's, or Parkinson's disease. And it goes far beyond that including information on the condition of your DNA. One of the major aging issues is if your DNA has replicated true through the years. Genetic mutations in your DNA cause cancer and many aging related problems. I got 4 pages of bio info like I am not predisposed to going bald.
The number one surprise....I have always been very strong, like bench pressing 200 pounds more that the top linebacker back high school. My test said "unusual muscle structure like that found in elite athletes" Now I know there is a biological reason for the strength. Last time I was in the hospital this thin male nurse was looking for a spot on my arms for an injection that couldn't go into muscle. He said how do you get muscles like that, that is all muscle. He told me he had been working out ant trying to bulk up. I was really beat up and on morphine, and I said eat a lot of veggies and dead animal, LOL.
The only other surprise was found out is one of the groups they have the least amount of data on is native Americans, for example tribal/origin info. It turns out I am 91% native American 4% Scandinavian, 3% Irish, and 2% Portuguese. I would have done the DNA test for the health information alone.1981 GS1100E

going back only 6 generations results in 64 uber grandparents, reverse that and add in all their descendants and you have a lot of cousins. You probably interact with family members everyday and don't even know you're genetically related.Originally posted by trent View PostI did a ancestry. Com bit.
Very interesting, after great grandparents no names on the tree were familiar.
But parents and myself were on there..cool

the most accurate ancestry part of your result would be the native ancestry, unless you're from Alaska you're related to every other indigenous person in the Americas regardless where they are. The other percentages are small and vague, DNA results pinpointing exact countries of origin are sketchy they can't really do that it's marketing simplified so the average person can understand it. They can only tell you you share genetic material that is found predominately in those countries.Originally posted by metalfab View PostThe DNA tests are evolving, and getting very useful. I've known two separate couple who after some research found out or thought they were related...lolOriginally posted by wyly View Postgoing back only 6 generations results in 64 uber grandparents, reverse that and add in all their descendants and you have a lot of cousins. The word on one side of my family was that they were horse rustlers run out of Georgia after the Civil War. I could believe it... there's absolutely no information on who came from where or did what prior to about 1880, and the old folks on that end of the family always sounded more like NE Georgia, not SW Indiana. (If you've ever read or seen video of older folks from the Foxfire project in Georgia, that's what they sounded like: https://www.foxfire.org/ ) Same figures of speech, accent, food, etc.
There's a claim of some German descent in there, and I remember my great-grandmothers usually swore in broken German. They didn't speak German at all, but they used German curse words when the occasion arose.
I have quite a bit more info from my Dad's side; pretty sure they were mostly English, and settled in northern Ohio and Indiana. One kept a journal during his time in the Union Army in the civil war. And there are at least two instances of first cousins getting married, which was considered perfectly fine in the 1800s.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

we all marry our cousins it comes down to degrees of genetic separationOriginally posted by bwringer View PostAnd there are at least two instances of first cousins getting married, which was considered perfectly fine in the 1800s.
I did a guesstimate calculation for degrees of separation for my wife who is Han Chinese and my northern euro self. Between 30-40,000 yrs ago( 1,500 - 2,000 generations) we would've been cousins living somewhere in central Asia. Our ancestors split sometime after that point, some migrating east and others went north west into europe.1979 CBX, AW440 Maico, GS1150EF
