Where to get moly paste? And how do I clean my (shaftie) breather system?

This is all on my 81 gs650gl

Does anyone know of a moly paste besides what's sold at Honda Dealers? I have my rear wheel off and got about 3 tablespoons of gear oil out of my rear drive splines... and also what seems to be the 3% moly lithium-grease (DON'T use it on your drive splines). It was in a puddle on the bottom of the wheel...

Anyway, I'm in a tiny town now and I don't think any car parts places will have it. I guess I'll have to make a trip tomorrow. I don't really want to leave my bike apart overnight though... heh. I got all excited in the sunlight and having my last day of 2 of my regular classes and just dove into the project.

Also, how do I clean the breather system, supposing it's plugged? Do I drain the gear oil, then remove the 9 bolts, then clean it somehow? It looks like it's not supposed to be removed.

The paste? The guys at O'Reilly/Kragen told me on the phone it was just grease. Hmmm. I guess I should have gone and checked it out.

Usually if oil comes out it's because it's too full.

Yep, yep. I had overfilled it in the past. I think the passages for the breather system might be plugged and I'd like to check while I have the wheel off.

Any idea if I can clean the breather system if I take off the plate? It seems like a big deal. If not, is there a way to check it with the plate with the breather system in it still attached?

Something else I'm wondering - is there a possibility my oil seal is failed? I don't think there should have been anywhere near that much oil floating around the spline area.

Loctite also sells true 65% moly paste (not grease). It's available through Grainger stores and a few other retailers. Here's the product info from Loctite's Industrial page.

Ooooh thanks fastpakr! I can call around and see if people have something and actually give them a part number. I wouldn't mind waiting, but I want to get riding again soon and see if it's the seal or my overfilled oil. I am afraid it's the seal. Oh well, I always welcome new adventures!

Personally, I'd order up some moly paste, throw some good grease in there and ride. It won't hurt anything for a few days. If you can't get the Honda paste, or the Loctite moly paste from Grainger, there is a Suzuki part number -- look in the "OPTIONAL" fiche on your favorite online source for Suzuki parts.

And yeah, the big seal will leak gear oil if the final drive is the least bit overfilled. The spec is with the bike cold and on the centerstand, add oil only to the bottom of the threads of the fill plug. Although the seal is a bit expensive ($40 or so) it's not hard to replace -- I found a large PVC plastic plumbing adaptor at Lowe's that fit perfectly as a seal driver. A few whacks with a rubber mallet and the deed was done. IIRC, the seal can block the breather if it's driven in too far, so be careful.

Moly paste is actually very abrasive to softer materials, so if you're sloppy with the stuff it isn't good for the seal. Moly paste has only a few, very specific uses in metal-to-metal contact areas where there's little relative motion between the parts.

As far as the breather system, just blow it out with compressed air through the breather hole. You'll hear a little tiny bit of air making its way through.

If you do decide to take the back of the final drive off, make sure you have a new o-ring first. You'll also want to heat the bolts before you try to remove them -- they're wearing thread locker, and you'll break at least one or two if you try to remove them cold.

Bought some honda 60 moly paste at a bike shop near here and I just got back. I'm going to put just enough on the splines and ride it a few miles, check for leaks and repeat.

I'll take a flashlight and a q-tip or something, but I didn't see the breather hole before. I knew about where it was, but not exactly. And definitely thank you for warning me about the thread locker!! Broken bolts in the final drive might be the end of the bike, with its other minor issues nickel and diming me.

Hopefully it's just moly time, reassembly time, and then back to riding like
